After 18 months of fighting to keep the Shopping Village open, traders and artists on Ridley Road are being told to get ready for their eviction notices. A revised planning application has been submitted for the building. If approved, it will mean scores of traders and artists will be forced out in a matter of months.
We need to get as many objections to Hackney Council as we can. Numbers count. Please submit your objection now. It only takes two minutes, and you can do it here: <shorturl.at/gsvCD>.
In your objection, you may wish to mention one or more of the following impacts of the proposal:
* halving the amount of vital storage space available for traders in the basement of the building, undermining the street market;
reducing the number of small retail units on the ground floor from 60 to 20;
* replacing two floors of affordable cultural space with expensive office space that is not accessible for the existing community;
* displacing black and minority ethnic businesses providing an essential service to Hackney residents;
* building high-cost private flats that will create noise conflicts between street traders and residents;
* removing essential storage for barrows by landscaping the Shopping Village forecourt;
We need Hackney Council to be absolutely flooded with objections. Please step up for the traders and studio artists today.
