A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Education and Integrity (DEI) within the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) of the Office of the Secretary (OS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) located in Rockville, Maryland.

ORI promotes integrity in biomedical and behavioral research supported by the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) at more than 5,000 institutions worldwide. DEI manages statements submitted by PHS-funded institutions assuring that they have in place policies and procedures for handling allegations of research misconduct, reviews those institutional policies and procedures, prepares guidance to institutions for fostering responsible conduct of research, develops educational resources and programs to help institutions foster environments of research integrity, funds research on research integrity, and communicates information about research integrity through the ORI website, the ORI newsletter, the ORI annual report and various social media.

The objective of this project is to develop experience that will help the participant advance in their academic and professional goals. Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant(s) will develop several experiences in communications, project management, evaluations, research, and other areas that can be applied to a broad range of careers or prepare them for advanced courses in health communications.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to learn about research integrity issues, responsible conduct of research, and be involved in, including but not limited to, the following opportunities:

  • Researching, developing, implementing, reviewing, and editing online and social media content to interact with the research community. ORI currently uses Twitter, YouTube, and a blog for social media.
  • Supporting the development of promotional materials and outreach activities for stakeholders in research integrity and the responsible conduct of research
  • Supporting Team projects to develop multimedia education products on research integrity (such as videos and infographics) based on adult learning models
  • Participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of ORI-sponsored conferences, and workshops
  • Conducting research on web strategies, supporting the development and implementation of web strategies to advance the agency’s communications efforts
  • Writing, editing, and collaborating on the creation and posting of digital content, including images, visual, and textual content, as well as coordinating the timely posting of materials
  • Learning how to co-develop and present information efficiently and effectively on ORI-run webpages
  • Learning how to use Google Analytics to determine where the agency’s web content needs to be redeveloped, and to provide new and updated web content and wireframes
  • Learning how to conduct site usability testing, including evaluating results, and reporting recommendations
  • Learning how to identify, screen, and analyze the responsible conduct of research (RCR) literature on the effectiveness and/or cost-effectiveness of various RCR interventions; and communicating the results of these reviews in diverse formats to various audiences
  • Contributing to the collaborative development of briefs and white papers, reports, and peer-reviewed research articles, based upon DEI activities
  • Learning and contributing to the development of a variety of educational resources on research integrity and the responsible conduct of research for researchers, research administrators, research integrity officers, institutional legal counsel, and institutional review board (IRB) members from national and international institutions
  • Assisting in the development of targeted presentations of division products and services to relevant members of the research and health community

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 2019

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Rockville, Maryland, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by June 2019. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of writing for a lay audience about science and legal or ethical issues as evidenced by a technical writing sample
  • Familiarity with technical writing and science communications
  • Strong proof of reading and editing knowledge for grade level, plain language and/or the Associated Press (AP) Style
  • Strong written, oral, and electronic communication knowledge
