A research opportunity is currently available with the Workforce Development Team in the Office of the Director (OD) of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

NCHHSTP’s mission is to maximize public health and safety nationally and internationally through the elimination, prevention, and control of disease, disability, and death caused by human immuno-deficiency virus infection/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, non-HIV retroviruses, viral hepatitis, other sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may have the opportunity to be involved in the following opportunities:

  • Conducting educational needs assessments and utilizing findings to inform the development of workforce program goals and objectives
  • Contributing to the creation of logic models and SWOT analysis of NCHHSTP Workforce Development initiatives and programs
  • Participating in key stakeholder interviews with NCHHSTP leadership and internal partners
  • Integrating, analyzing, and maintaining NCHHSTP workforce survey data from a variety of sources such as Workforce web site, NCHHSTP workforce blog, survey monkey, program evaluations, and other data points
  • Assessing knowledge level and ability to reach target audiences (management, supervisors, team leads, branch chiefs and senior leadership) with employee engagement and/or employee satisfaction approaches/strategies
  • Conducting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, obtaining approvals for planned evaluation projects, and presenting findings at meetings and/or conferences
  • Participating in the design and implementation of evaluation surveys, analyze survey data, contributing to the development of workforce evaluation plans, making recommendations for improvements, and synthesizing reports

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge with applied research and evaluation of projects or program initiatives
  • Familiarity with public health education and promotion, program evaluation, qualitative and quantitative research
  • Educational needs assessments, data analysis and reporting
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Knowledge of evaluation strategies and techniques to include logic models, SWOT analysis, survey design and implementation
  • Understanding of qualitative and quantitative data analysis
