Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the Office of Policy, Partnerships, and Communication (OPPC), in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) within the National Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

This project will provide experience in DNPAO's approach to promoting partnerships and strategies that help communicate about the successes of the division. The project involves training with a diverse group of public health professionals, including nutritionists, health educators, and lawyers. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Receive training to collect and analyze the different funding models and successes of DNPAO's Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) program so that DNPAO can better communicate the legacy of the program and its contributions to health equity
  • Receive training to track and analyze internal and external requests through SharePoint, the forecasting portal, and daily announcements to ensure that leadership is aware of upcoming releases and can respond to immediate requests from NCCDPHP and CDC leadership
  • Participate in team and division-wide meetings to identify opportunities to further promote and share the efforts of the division
  • Attend a national meeting and/or site visit to learn about the latest science and practice related to nutrition and physical activity 

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 17, 2019

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields, with a demonstrated understanding of health equity, community engagement, and resilience, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the start date of the appointment. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Experience working with an organization or group focused on partnerships and communications
  • Understanding of health promotion and behavior strategies
  • Understanding of community resiliency
