Description

A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) within the National Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

This project will provide experience in DNPAO’s approach to promoting healthy growth and development among children aged 0 to 5 years including support for breastfeeding, healthy eating, physical activity, and reduced screen time in the early care and education (ECE) setting, also known as child care. DNPAO conducts surveillance, translates research, develops technical resources, and supports programmatic activities and evaluation of ECE obesity prevention interventions at the state and facility-level. The project involves training with and guidance by a diverse group of public health professionals, including epidemiologists, nutritionists, health education specialists, and evaluation specialists.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Researching, synthesizing, and translating scientific and programmatic information related to evidence-based obesity prevention in early care and education (ECE) through activities such as literature reviews, etc.
  • Collaborating with CDC experts to receive training in producing ECE surveillance summary documents and written reports (including State Indicator Reports, action guides, web-based content)
  • Receive mentoring and training in the subject matter through participation in ECE surveillance and evaluation activities
  • Developing communication skills through presenting research and surveillance findings to a range of audiences including prevention experts, public health, and early care practitioners
  • Participating in Division groups to learn the breadth of our Division's mission and receive training on a range of subjects including nutrition, physical activity, obesity, risk factor surveillance and monitoring, policy assessment, and partnering within and outside the federal sector

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 2019

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by the end of May 2019. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Knowledge of child development
  • Familiarity with Early Care and Education settings
  • Familiarity with policy and/or environmental change strategies that address nutrition, physical activity or obesity
  • Experience in nutrition, physical activity and/or obesity
  • Experience with surveillance and monitoring techniques
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques, and previous scientific writing experience

  • Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 5/31/2019 12:00:00 AM.
