Description

A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT) within the National Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

About 14 million people, aged = 12 years, experience vision and eye problems—refractive errors, vision impairment, and eye diseases. This population is expected to increase dramatically in the coming decades, due to the aging of the population, changes in racial ethnic groups, and the increase in chronic diseases like diabetes. Vision loss is associated with high prevalence of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, depression, social isolation, and poorer health-related quality of life. In 2016, the National Academies of Sciences, Medicine and Engineering (NASEM) published a report providing a roadmap for addressing vision and eye health from a population health perspectives. In response to these complex needs, the Vision Health Initiative (VHI) conducts a broad range of surveillance and epidemiologic studies of vision loss and eye diseases; applied public health research focusing on developing and testing evidence-based and cost-effective public health interventions; program implementation; and educating the public and decision makers.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following training activities:

  • Train with VHI team members and contractors to produce papers and reports by learning how to review literature, analyze data, and write manuscripts.
  • Obtain experience in communication and Website enhancement; train with VHI team and contractors to create, populate, and sustain the VHI Website including the static pages and the interactive data tools.
  • Learn how to communicate with states to build infrastructure and enhance state capacity to prevent vision loss and improve eye health. Train with VHI team members to produce state fact sheets and identify promising interventions.
  • Learn how to develop and refine targeted and sustained communication and distribution systems for VHI information and products. (e.g., design and implement dissemination strategies to the public, private and organizational sectors.)
  • Receive training in partnership engagement and management; train with VHI team partners to identify opportunities and common projects. Learn how to communicate with internal and external partners to increase and sustain the visibility of the Vision Health Initiative.
  • Obtain experience in collaborating effectively with other public health professionals, community-based organizations, academic institutions, other divisions and centers at CDC and other government agencies to achieve overall VHI objectives
  • Obtain experience in presenting scientific research findings and program policy information at national conferences and meetings.
