A research opportunity is currently available with the Office of Training, Education, and Communication (OTEC) of the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ), within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The selected participant will be mentored by health communication specialists who are experienced in the areas of risk communication science, clear communication, and communication evaluation.

The participant will be involved in the following training activities:

  • Learn and apply the principles of clear communication and risk communication science to create communication products
  • Learn how to communicate health information to multiple audiences, including travelers, expatriates, physicians, and others who work with globally mobile populations (e.g. travelers, immigrants, refugees, migrants, binational populations)
  • Learn how to evaluate the reach of various communication products and strategies to determine their effectiveness
  • Learn how to plan, produce, and develop multimedia presentations, videos, and trainings
  • Learn methods of effective interviewing in order to create engaging and meaningful stories
  • Learn how to promptly research and respond to inquiries from the public by collaborating with science subject matter experts
  • Attend trainings and webinars on communication topics (e.g., best practices in social media message development and web content development, communication evaluation, plain language, digital first principles)
  • Support and respond to public health emergencies (e.g., Ebola, measles) as needed

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, GA, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree (preferred) in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by September 2019. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team setting
  • Experience in principles of clear communication, health literacy, and plain language of written content to multiple types of audiences
  • Diverse experience in creating content for a variety of communication formats and platforms, particularly social media
