Description

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

Two research opportunities are available with the Division of Community Health Investigations (DCHI), of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The selected participants for this opportunity will learn to develop public health assessments and conduct other site-related activities. The participants will strengthen their skills in a variety of environmental health disciplines, including air quality, water quality, hazardous waste management, epidemiology, and toxicology. The participants will gain experience in reviewing chemical specific data for the purpose of evaluating human exposure and assessing the public health impact of exposure to environmental contaminants. Specifically, some of the activities the participants will be involved with include:

  • Learning about the toxicological properties of environmental contaminants
  • Compiling, organizing, and analyzing environmental sampling results
  • Using various software programs to evaluate the public health significance of environmental data
  • Learning about the pathways of human exposure to environmental contamination that lead to human health impacts

The participants will have the opportunity to apply their talents at national priority list sites, such as

  • Burlington Industries
  • Keystone Corridor Groundwater
  • Various per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) sites (public and private water systems)
  • Saint Gobain Performance Plastics Facility

Please visit the following link for a basic description of DCHI’s health assessment process https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/hac/products/pha.html  or here to view DCHI’s Public Health Assessment Guidance Manual https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/hac/PHAManual/toc.html.

This opportunity will allow participants to take part in programs, projects, and activities related to the mission of ATSDR which is to protect communities from harmful health effects related to exposure to natural and man-made hazardous substances. ATSDR does this by responding to environmental health emergencies; investigating emerging environmental health threats; conducting research on the health impacts of hazardous waste sites; and building capabilities of and providing actionable guidance to state and local health partners.
