The NYCDOE Supportive Environment Framework (SEF) describes the elements of making an environment truly “supportive.” Anchored in evidence-based research about effective best practices for school climate, social-emotional learning, and culturally responsive education, this Framework will support schools and district stakeholders in understanding all aspects that contribute to a Supportive Environment. This overview is designed to serve as a quick guide to the Supporting Environment Framework, its purpose, and the timeline for implementation.

The NYCDOE Supportive Environment Framework (SEF) describes the elements of making an environment truly “supportive.” Anchored in evidence-based research about effective best practices for school climate, social-emotional learning, and culturally responsive education, this Framework will support schools and district stakeholders in understanding all aspects that contribute to a Supportive Environment.  The Framework is organized into four domains with indicators describing best practices and corresponding resources, supports and strategies for each domain and indicator.  The Framework also includes a Self-Assessment component that school leaders and school teams can use to drive the CEP development process.

In order to support school leaders and their communities in developing Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) goals aligned to the Supportive Environment Framework, the DOE has developed a recorded informational webinar. This optional webinar provides an overview of the Supportive Environment Framework and how it can be used to drive school improvement efforts, specifically focusing on the development of Supportive Environment CEP goals and action plans.
