Dear Wrightstown Families!
Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were filled with much joy and love. With a new year comes a focus on new resolutions. The New Year is a perfect time to improve ourselves and think about what is really important to us. Maybe it’s incorporating exercise into your daily routine, reading an extra book, or being less connected to electronics. Whatever you choose, let us all commit to improving ourselves in 2020 and support one another along the way!
January is Board Appreciation Month. We would like to recognize all of the Council Rock School Board Members for their time, support, and commitment to our children and school system. Thank you to Kristin, Marcell, Andy Block, Denise Brooks, Mark Byelich, Ed Salamon, Dr. Michael Thorwart, and Mariann Mckee.
The Martin Luther King Day of Service will be held on January 20, 2020. I would like to thank everyone who generously donated items for the collection. Congratulations to Sixth grade student, Ben Woodward who was selected as one of two winners of the MLK Day of Service essay contest. Ben will have an opportunity to read his essay on Monday where he will receive an award and be recognized by state representatives. I am also proud that WES has 10 sixth grade students attending the “Day On” to assemble care packages.
The Diversity and Inclusion Team recently assembled to hold our first meeting of the year. Thank you to WES parents, Mrs. Holmes and Mrs. Jafry for participating in this meeting and collaborating with us on such important work. As a result of this meeting, WES will be adding a “Culture Corner” to our morning announcements. This addition will highlight national celebrations, important dates, interviews with staff members and parents to discuss diversity, and more! We will once again display a bulletin board representative of specific worldwide monthly celebrations from around the world.
I am proud of the students and staffs’ continued work and effort as we implement our Raven Ready program this year. An overview of this program was shared via a video at Back to School Night. This video is also posted to the front of our website. As an entire school building, we continue to teach, model, and re-teach expected behaviors in all areas of our school, including the bus. Students are excited when they are recognized and rewarded with a Raven Ready Reward card for their good choices and behavior. The Principal’s 200 Board that is displayed outside of the cafeteria attracts a lot of attention from students!
Schools are closed on Monday, January 20th for the Martin Luther King holiday.
Students will have an early dismissal at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28th. PM Kindergarten attends.
Sincerely,
Beth A. Fox

Literacy Corner by Mrs. Paula Etgen
Wrightstown is beginning the year reading! Our Book Bowl meetings have begun, and we have over 45 second, third and fourth graders who have signed up to be on the Wrightstown team! Here is some more information about Book Bowl if you are interested. Let’s hear it for our Wrightstown Readers!
SAVE the date for our annual Reading Camp In! It will be held this year on March 5th, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. in the gym. It is always a fun event! There will be tents set up and the students can read, play games, enjoy some indoor s’mores, and even rescue Cat in the Hat from the hands of the Grinch in the Escape Room! Stay tuned for more information on how to RSVP to this event. If you have a tent that you would be able to share for this event, please email Mrs. Etgen at petgen@crsd.org. Hope to see you there!
From the Nurse's Office
Parents! Remember to have your forms filled out at the next appointment!! Dental and Physical exam forms can be found on the Council Rock website: www.crsd.org. Search for "Health Services". You can print it out from there.
Also during the winter months, consider sending your child in with a personal sized lip balm to soothe those chapped lips!
Thanks for helping us care for your children!
The WES Nurses
Counselor's Corner by Mrs. Nancy Jachimski
Career Lessons are underway! In addition to social-emotional learning, students in grades 3-6 participate in career readiness lessons.
Grade 3: Growth Mindset
Students are introduced to the idea of exercising your brain through the book, Your Fantastic Elastic Brain: Stretch It, Shape It. This book teaches students the various parts and functions of the brain. Each part plays a role in how we grow and learn. Mistakes are inevitable, but by perseverance we can help train our brains (“mistakes actually help our brains to grow"). Students also discuss how growth mindset promotes career readiness.
Grade 4: Perseverance and Goal Setting
Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman is about achieving goals while also incorporating the importance of diversity. In the story, Grace perseveres through obstacles to reach her goal of playing Peter Pan in the school play. Students participated in a class discussion on the themes of perseverance, goal setting, and career choices. Each student identified a career goal and identified potential obstacles to reaching that goal.
Grade 5: Conflict Resolution
Students learn that in order to successfully solve a problem, they must avoid blaming “You” statements such as: “You never listen to my ideas when we work together in class. You think your ideas are always better.” Instead, students should use an “I” Statement to begin the problem-solving process more effectively. For example: “I feel frustrated when no one listens to my ideas during group work. Next time, please give me a chance to share my thoughts.” We also learn that perspective taking is a key component to avoiding conflicts. Lastly, we discuss the connect between conflict resolution skills, career readiness and success.
Grade 6: Personality Style and Working Together
Students take a personality quiz known at the “Color Quiz.” Using the results from the quiz, they take time to understand their own strengths/weaknesses, learn how others are motivated, and consider how this information might help us work cooperatively. Students also explored careers related to their personality type.
Student Council Corner
WES is having its second annual Candy Gram Extravaganza! Student Council members will be selling Tootsie Pops near the front office during the week of February 3rd through February 7th from 8:50am-9:10am. They cost is $1 per pop and the money raised will go toward purchasing a school mascot costume for our school! All Tootsie Pops will be delivered to homerooms on Thursday, February 13th. Students can purchase pops for friends or siblings in other classes as well as those at home.
Our next spirit day is “CRAZY” hair day on Friday, January 24th. We can’t wait to see some crazy hair!
News from the Library!
It has been a busy second marking period in the Library, we hope that all of the Kindergarten students are enjoying checking out two books. At the Library, we encourage all children to check out at least one book that will be a challenge and help them to improve their reading. World Read Aloud Day is Wednesday, February 5th. Please consider making this a special read aloud day with your child.
There will be a Scholastic Book Fair in the Library March 2nd through March 6th. The late night will be March 5th in conjunction with the Reading Camp In at the school.
The Bucks County Reading Olympics will be held on Wednesday, April 15th at Mill Creek Elementary School in Bristol Township. A huge thank you to our two wonderful coaches Mrs. Jessica Gilbert and Ms. Ashley Manero. This is always such a great experience for the students and we could not run the program without their support.
As you begin to think about spring cleaning please put some books aside for the first annual Wrightstown Elementary Used Book Sale. This book sale will be managed by Mrs. Bolte and the Librarians. We feel this would be wonderful opportunity to put books into the hands of our students while helping the environment by stressing the importance of re-using materials and the benefit of pre-owned materials.
Geo Bee by Mrs. Jennifer French
Last Thursday, we held our Wrightstown Elementary National Geographic Geo Bee. We are super proud of all of our finalists who wowed us with their incredible knowledge of the United States and world geography! Finalists included 6th graders Ben Woodward, Ray Sullivan, Samuel Khelmer, Joseph Qiao, Joey Stupack, Conor McCaffrey, Michael Jacoby, Denis Kasyanov, and 5th graders Brendan Doyle and Peyton Longenbach. We would like to congratulate our winner, Samuel Khelmer and runner up Brendan Doyle for an impressive final round. Our Wrightstown Elementary champion Samuel Khelmer will take an online qualifying test at the end of January to possibly qualify to compete with 100 of the top test scorers in Pennsylvania! Good luck Samuel!
