NYPD: 1 dead, 2 cops injured in pair of crashes hours apart on same Annadale block

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- Hours of emergency sirens and helicopters disrupted what typically is a quiet block in Annadale on Saturday night into Sunday morning, during a pair of car crashes that appear unrelated.

One of the incidents, reported just after 8 p.m., left a woman, 32, dead and a man, 35, hospitalized, according to an NYPD spokeswoman.

The other, reported about seven hours later and just feet away, resulted in two officers suffering minor injuries, police said.

A search for suspects in both cases remained ongoing Sunday afternoon.

MAN HOPPING FENCES, REAR PASSENGER DEAD

Emergency crews responded Saturday night to the intersection of Arden Avenue and Annadale Road for a report of a crash.

One of the vehicles was a 2018 Lexus SUV, allegedly stolen prior to the crash.

The other, a 2012 Ford SUV, was occupied a male driver and a woman riding in the back seat. It wasn’t immediately clear if any other passengers were in the vehicle.

The 32-year-old female was ejected in the crash and found lying outside the vehicle when authorities arrived, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

The 35-year-old man and driver was transported to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, where he was listed in stable condition Sunday, authorities said.

After crashing into the Ford SUV, the Lexus struck an unoccupied, parked 2018 BMW. The BMW then reportedly struck an unoccupied 2019 Ford SUV, police said.

Surveillance video obtained by the Advance/SILive.com shows what appears to be an unidentified black male running through backyards and hopping fences on the South Shore early Sunday morning, moments after the incident.

The incident comes amid a spike in car thefts across Staten Island, and New York City.

From April 12 to April 19, police responded to 8 grand larceny auto incidents on Staten Island, compared to three during the same time period last year, according to the NYPD’s CompStat data.

Year-to-date, data shows a 21% increase in car thefts across the borough, as of April 19, compared to the same time in 2019, data shows.

Citywide, the NYPD has seen a near 63% uptick in reports of grand larceny auto.

CRASH INJURES COPS HOURS LATER, NEAR SAME LOCATION

About seven hours later and just feet away from the first crash on Saturday night, an NYPD squad car was struck near the intersection of Arden Avenue and Carlton Blvd in what appears to be an unrelated incident.

The second incident, reported at about 2:45 a.m., left two police officers with minor injuries, according to an NYPD spokeswoman.

The officers were involved in a traffic stop of some kind around the time of the crash, though it wasn’t immediately clear how that might have played into the incident, a law enforcement source said Sunday.

The suspect is described as a white male, who fled on foot in an unknown direction.
