About Me

From 2003 to July 2017, I served on the staff of the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation in Washington, DC—first as director of the foundation's capacity-building programs and then, from 2010 to 2017, as vice president for programs and communications. From 1999 to 2003 I was executive director of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations, and from 1992 to 1999 I held a series of senior management positions at BoardSource.

I began blogging in 2009 on the Chronicle of Philanthropy's website hoping to start new conversations about nonprofit boards. I relaunched as a freestanding blog in 2017 to address an expanded range of issues, including the complicated relationship between nonprofits and their funders.

I currently serve on the board of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, which I chaired in 2022. Opinions expressed are my own, and do not reflect the views of organizations with which I'm affiliated.
