Making a go of it: Area restaurant owners staying open (carefully) during coronavirus

Restaurants

Restaurants

The fear of coronavirus and subsequent shelter at home order has been devastating for area restaurants.

Pa. eateries have been forced to close dining rooms and resort to take-out and delivery service only.

Some have shut their doors but many are persevering, trying to make a go of it. We are profiling some of the area’s favorite dining spots.

If you are a restaurant owner that is still operating and would like to take part in the next edition, please email PennLive Photo Department Lead Joe Hermitt at jhermitt@pennlive.com.

We will need your business hours and a sentence or two on your best selling items and any special experiences you’ve had since the shutdown. We will contact you to set up a time for a photo.

For other businesses that are up and running and could use your support, check out our Rally 4 Local listings.

Midst8 Taco

Mid St8 Taco, West Shore Farmers Market, Lemoyne

Business hours: Tuesday - 8am to 2pm, Friday - 8am to 6pm, Saturday - 8am to 2pm

We had every intention of closing after the governor’s order to close everything but essential businesses in the state came down and the next day we rang up only $100 in sales. I had already let go of an employee, told a new hire not to come in and announced our closing. We ran out of our food supply on Friday and, again, confirmed my fears, by ringing up another record low in sales.

All we had to do on Saturday was empty our freezer of tamales -plus make some orders of guacamole and chips to offload our supply of avocados.

As we were in filling people’s pre-placed orders, several of our customers who were in the market came to our counter, bewildered that we weren’t open, pleading with us for food, for whatever we had or would make for them and it was at that point that I realized we were going to have to stay open and that we were indeed, an essential business.

Our top seller is, without a doubt, the Midst8 11, three tacos for 11 dollars, an extra dollar for carne asada or shrimp. Surprisingly, during this pandemic though, another best-seller has been our empanadas, made in several flavors, chorizo and jack, chicken and vegetarian-currently black bean and jack but hoping for local asparagus soon.

It’s been hard making a go of it, I won’t lie -but also -every week’s sales have gotten a little better, even this one when Pennsylvanians were forced to wear masks into the market. A big ask in these parts (but most of our customers are pretty cool and many are tipping/paying significantly higher than their bill in an effort to help us keep going. They’re the best.

Thanks so much for your support.

Business hours: Tuesday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

I opened October 4th so of course, this pandemic has caused a strain. I have stayed open normal hours; I have one cook whose hours were greatly reduced, and a counter person who works when I am in the kitchen on days my cook is off. My counter person is on reduced hours as well. Each day, I work alone at various times. There’s been days where I’ve gotten 3 orders for a total of 15 sandwiches in 20 minutes...and while it’s stressful, I am also so grateful and people are so understanding when I tell them I’m alone and ask them to give me 30 minutes to make their food when they are at the end of the line.

The absolute most popular thing I sell above any sandwich on the menu is my bagels and homemade cream cheeses. The bagels are shipped to me directly from New York City and are baked to order.

They are given an estimated time their order will be ready. By the time they get there, the order will be ready on the bar and available to grab and go. If they wish to sign and leave a tip that is an option available to them depending on their comfort level. We sanitize our pens periodically throughout the day to make this process as clean and covid free as possible. The procedure for curbside is basically the same, but we add the 18% gratuity and the guests just call us when they are outside. We wear masks and gloves all day as well and ask that anyone who comes into our building do the same to protect us and others around them.

Delivery Info: To place a delivery order, call in and provide name, phone number, and address. All orders are pay over the phone and we automatically add an 18% gratuity to make it as contactless as possible. When the driver arrives they can place on the doorstep or wherever instructed. We just need the person to come to the door and provide ID showing they are 21 or over.

Our beer lists are updated daily on our website. Cans and crowler options change quickly so checking this out beforehand really helps expedite the process. Crowlers are a 32oz can that can be filled with anything we have on draft. They range from about 9.00-12.00 depending on what you fill them with. Also, starting next week (the exact day is still TBD) we will roll out a new online ordering service. This will be for beer pickup only and will help us accommodate even more guests in a timely fashion. People can access this from the homepage on our website.

Each location is also offering a small selection of grocery items for convenient grab and go purchases, the Mechanicsburg location offering the largest selection featuring a pantry, cold grocery, and Arooga’s favorites such as Buffalo Chicken Dip and BIG Pretzel to grab on the go and take to make at home. Looking for cold beer to go? Catch our half-price growler happy hour daily 3pm-5pm and get your Arooga’s growler filled with any draft for half price.

We are so grateful to our communities for their support of Arooga’s during these challenging circumstances. We couldn’t have made it through this without them or our hardworking employees. Because services have been reduced to only takeout and delivery, we’ve unfortunately had to furlough a large number of staff so that we can weather the pandemic. To help provide them with some financial relief during these difficult times, we have started an Arooga’s Furloughed Employee Relief Fund where 100% of egift card sales up to $50,000 purchased at www.aroogas.com until Wednesday, April 29th will be distributed to employees furloughed from Pennsylvania corporate-owned locations. We thank anyone who makes a purchase for their generous support of our hardworking team. We are looking forward to seeing our guests and Arooga’s family again soon.

We were blessed to be able to remain open even in the face of reduced business and we wanted to try and help others in our community. We made pizza kits for folks to enjoy our pizza and family fun while the shut down continued and offer frozen take 'n bake pizzas. We made extra of these pizza kits and offered those, no questions asked, to anyone in need a few times. It is very apparent that there are many out there struggling and we offered what we could, when we could.

We have had some local business persons ask about sponsoring and distributing more pizza kits, so we hope to do that again. The biggest program we would like to build on is our “Feed our Heroes” program. We have this available to any person or business wanting to help our local front line workers. Zeiderelli’s will match these donations. You can stop by or go to online ordering on our website www.zeiderellis.com to participate and you will find the Feed our Heroes tab.

We have two things set up for this. FEED 20 - we send cold subs and individual bags of chips to feed 20 people who work in our local hospitals and clinics. We have the feed 20 at a reduced total cost of $75. The other is to purchase a meal for a first responder at a reduced cost of $9. When purchased, we place a slip on the wall which is good for any first responder out on the job to stop by and choose a cold sub, bag of chips and a bottled soda. In both sponsorship, you can leave a personal message of encouragement and thank you (if ordered online, please leave it in the comment section and we will be sure to include your message). We will match these sponsorships/donations. We have fed a few hundred but surely hope to feed more.

These small acts of kindness remind us that even in the most difficult of times, we are all in this together and will get through this together.
