A window of hope during the coronavirus pandemic: More portraits of how central Pennsylvania is coping, week 4

As the statewide stay-at-home order moved into its fifth week, PennLive photographers have been documenting how central Pennsylvanians are holding up. We have been traveling the area taking portraits of our friends and neighbors as they do their part in battling the coronavirus pandemic.

We found families bonding over games, hobbies, art, exercise, binge-watching, Nerf-gun battles, and long conversations. We are trying to take things in stride and carry on as best we can.

So, even though the pandemic is isolating us and keeping us locked up in our homes, it is important to remember we are not alone. We are all in this together.

We are planning on publishing a new version every Friday morning, so if you would like to participate in the next edition, please email your name, address and telephone number to Photo Department Lead Joe Hermitt at jhermitt@pennlive.com and we’ll get in touch. It will be a totally safe and non-contact situation, and we won’t post your address.

This series is powered by Renewal by Andersen.

The Strock family, from left, Kurt, Ori, 4, Kristin and Ira, 3 months in Ori’s playhouse in their Carlisle backyard." We have a new addition to the family to keep us busy during the quarantine. So we spend our days playing outside, changing diapers, going for walks, changing diapers, trying to get some work done for Kurt (co-owner of Strock Insurance Company) and Kristin (Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Dickinson College), and last but not least... changing diapers. Ori said ‘I like walking past my friends’ houses and waving at them from far away’."

Will and Amy Schmidt and their daughters Riley and Magill. “We’ve absolutely been spending a ton of time in our sweats but we miss dressing up too! We read that people have been getting all dolled up to do household chores so we figured...trash night and yard work! Our kids are NOT amused....but our neighbors are!”

Erika Epler of Annville in the family treehouse built by her father, with her son Elijah, 10, at far left, and daughter Maggie, 15, and her nephews Landyn Boltz, 6, second from left, and Mason Boltz, 8. “While I would not say the last few weeks have been easy, they have been educational, filled with laughter, anxiety, and some tears but we are together. And each day brings something new. We love to spend our days walking, hiking, fishing, working outside, playing ball and just being together. Things aren’t perfect but we have each other and that is as perfect as things can be for now.”

Members of the Mechanicsburg Volunteer Fire Department, from left, Sabrina McClintock, Assistant Chief Dalton Peters, Nick Bixler, Chief Koni Hench, Chris Bixler and Savannah Toddes. “At the Mechanicsburg Fire Department, operations have changed to accommodate the pandemic but the mission remains the same. The firefighters have been more careful about disinfecting firetrucks, tools, and equipment. Visits to the firehouse apart from responding to calls have been limited. Firefighters have also increased the use of personal protection on calls and maintained social distances as much as possible. The crews have worked hard to ensure the safety of members and the public while carrying out everyday responsibilities.”

ABC 27's Allie Berube at the station's studio. “Life has changed significantly for everyone in the last two weeks, but our jobs at ABC27 have largely stayed the same: keep our viewers informed. My role as a sports anchor has become more important to give information on closures, provide an escape from reality with fun stories and keep a pulse on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on our local teams. As we have far fewer employees in the building, I have now also taken over anchoring 30 minutes of news Monday through Friday, which gives me a sense of true purpose as I help our viewers stay safe. My job has changed in some fashion every single day I come into the studio, but I’m just grateful to have a career where I can help other people.”

From left, Jackson Doughty, 17, Spencer Doughty, 19, Nancy Adams and Steven Doughty at their Upper Allen Twp. home. Nancy and Steve are working from home 5 days a week. Jackson is doing Learning at Home with Mechanicsburg Area High School and Spencer is currently doing online learning at home in his program at Penn College of Technology, Williamsport but really would like to get back to continue to learn to weld. We are staying happy by working out and lifting weights at home, playing video games, and listening to music. Spencer is writing original guitar pieces and Jackson and Spencer are both cooking many family meals.

I am including a poem about connecting during a time of pandemic:

A Poem for Connecting in a Time of Pandemic, March 2020, Nancy E. Adams, c2020

My beloveds, in the ether

Ride on particles of light

So that we can meet each other

In a web of pixels bright

Our sadness and our laughter

Our celebration and our grief

Will connect through nodes and networks

Like the veins of sunlit leaf

The future all unknown

Our separation is avowed

In the meantime, we will meet

In golden sea, on silver cloud

It’s affected my income, but I’m working on offering virtual sessions to feed my creativity and continue building connections with people. Social isolation hasn’t been an issue thanks to takeout from local businesses and my three cats who are very confused about why I’m home 24/7.“

The Park family, from left, Ellie, Xander, 4, Zoe and Dave on their Carlisle front porch. “Ellie and Dave are lucky to be able to work from home; Ellie is a teacher at Carlisle High School and has been working hard making sure her students are still able to learn and grow in new, creative ways through the district’s online portal. Dave is an attorney at Martson Law and has been able to telecommute and hold meetings virtually. They are all able to spend a lot more time together, and have been hiking through the local trails, planting in their flower beds, building a raised-bed garden, and bonding together as a family! In many ways, this time together has allowed (or maybe forced) them to get to know each other better and to embrace family as community and support, even when isolated from the outside world.”

Attending LLUMC church services online, doing ZOOM meetings for office, Church Leadership Meetings, virtual choir practice, various groups i.e.(TEAM Pete friends, Snow White Club, Prayer Group) you name it.....we ZOOM it haha! Keeping connected also with the FB group Neighbors of Lower Paxton (invaluable sharing there), making calls to others to just “check-in”, planning on giving blood/plasma, supporting local restaurants and coffee shops (so important, if you can do it), and NO I have not watched a single episode of Tiger King - Should I?”

The Fletcher family, Wayne, Tricia , Wayne F II, and Kayla Fletcher with dog, Hershey. "We’ve kept a pretty consistent 8am - 4pm daily schedule here in the Fletcher Household. During that time I use Zoom to help provide educational opportunities for my students and also to connect with my players during our time away. My wife is able to work from home as well at this time and uses Zoom to connect with her players as well (she coaches travel softball). The kids, who are student-athletes in middle school, spend their days completing assignments for school, and work on arts and crafts projects. Wayne II has been helping to cook meals and Kayla has turned into quite the baker! They also get out and exercise, strength train and work on skills applicable to the sports that they play. Together we’ve worked on puzzles, found great books to read, tackle projects around the house, and binge watch tv shows at night before bed. As crazy as our schedules have been over the years, this break has given us a great opportunity to pause, reset, and learn to value and enjoy waking up everyday in good health and spirit!" Tangles has never been closed for this long and I’ve never gone this long without doing hair in my 20 years. I feel Kind of lost but I just try to use this time to rest because we’re definitely going to be very busy when we go back to work, that’s for sure! I’ve had a lot of clients reach out to see how we are doing .. Social media has been interesting, I have been watching all the home hair cutting and coloring videos out there. I have been receiving lots of texts and pics from clients asking for haircuts and just showing me pictures of their hair at this point and how they can’t wait till we’re back in business. “ April 14, 2020 Sean Simmers | ssimmers@pennlive.com
