Coronavirus is prompting colleges and universities nationwide to cancel in-person classes and close dorms. So, what’s a college student to do when they’re forced to leave campus dorms on short notice?
U-Haul announced this week they will offer 30-day free storage to displaced college students, nationwide and in Canada.
The U-Haul website states the “free month applies to new customers with college IDs and is a limited-time offer subject to availability.”
Typically offered to communities impacted by a natural disaster, this is the first time the Phoenix-based company has extended the 30-days free self-storage offer company wide, as stated on U-Haul’s website.
How is U-Haul prepared to help?
As the number of schools evacuating campuses due to coronavirus precautions continues to grow, U-Haul states “it is prepared for an early spring moving rush,” with 22,000 truck- and trailer-sharing locations.
To operate its vans and trucks the age requirement is 18, and one must have a valid driver’s license.
In addition, U-Haul also accepts third-party pay, which allows family members to fund their loved one’s moving and storage needs.

Additionally, U-Haul states the 30 days free self-storage offer also applies to usage of portable moving and storage containers. Containers have 257 cubic feet of space and one-ton capacity. They can be filled at U-Haul facilities and stored in their secure warehouses.
Other U-Haul services for college students
Besides the 30-days free self-storage offer, U-Haul offers Collegeboxes which serves 205-plus schools. Students can contact (866) 269-4887 or info@collegeboxes.com for more information and to create an account initiating an order. Here, boxes and packing supplies are delivered to a student’s residence. Once packed, an at-home service picks up the boxes from the dorm or apartment at no additional charge, says U-Haul.
And there is an international option. Items can be shipped anywhere across the globe, or students may opt to have Collegeboxes hold their personal belongings in secure storage at a nearby U-Haul facility.
