Nursing home patient in Essex County tests positive for coronavirus

A patient at a Cedar Grove nursing home tested positive for the coronavirus, the facility said.

The patient spent five weeks at the Canterbury at Cedar Grove nursing home and was transferred to an acute care hospital on March 15, according to a statement from the nursing home. Two days later, the individual tested positive for the virus while at the hospital.

The nursing home did not share the age of the patient or whether they had any underlying health conditions. No other residents have confirmed cases of COVID-19, the statement says.

Only essential employees are being allowed inside the facility and are screened before entering.

“We recognize the hardship this poses to our residents and their loved ones,” the statement reads. “We understand the deprivation, anguish and fear that our community experiences every day and our hearts go out to everyone involved with our facility.”

The case at the Cedar Grove nursing home comes as state officials warn of the spread of the COVID-19 in long-term care facilities across New Jersey with at least one case in 19 facilities, Department of Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli announced on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, there were at least 3,675 coronavirus cases in New Jersey and 44 deaths.
