Big ocean changes are happening, but global trends may not accurately represent what happens in coastal regions. With support from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), UConn marine scientist Samantha Siedlecki's research aims to help address this gap in knowledge. https://lnkd.in/emyZEfx

UConn was honored to host Congressman Joseph Courtney and Ambassador Myler last week to discuss our research in undersea vehicle technology. #NIUVT
On Thursday March 14th, the National Institute for Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT), together with the UConn College of Engineering, welcomed Congressman Joseph Courtney and Mr. Paul Myler, Deputy Head of Mission for the Embassy of Australia Washington DC, to the Innovation Partnership Building. Congressman Courtney and Mr. Meyer were briefed on UConn NIUVT leadership's recent visit to Australia, where they engaged with government and academia regarding mutual interests and opportunities to partner in research and workforce development opportunities available because of AUKUS, the trilateral partnership between the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Our researchers are setting new standards in the field of energy efficiency and research! Congratulations Dr. Wang on being awarded a $4.5 million grant to create open-source data visualization tools to display information about renewable energy sources and distributed energy resources from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This new “TRANSFORMATIVE” tool will make significant improvements in power grid efficiency, reliability, and resilience to bounce back from disruptions, like severe weather events.

DNA: It's not just for encoding genetic material anymore. Researchers are exploring techniques that will allow them to store, search, and sort all kinds of data using DNA. “Archiving information in synthetic DNA has emerged as an attractive solution to deal with the exploding growth of data in the modern world. However, quantitatively querying the data stored in DNA is still a challenge,” says Changchun Liu, professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UConn Health. In Nature Communications, Liu and a team of researchers discovered a way to simply and effectively search for data stored in DNA using a CRISPR-powered quantitative search engine. #uconnresearch #uconn #research #dna #crispr #data #datastorage #dnadata #encoding #naturecommunications https://lnkd.in/ercs-jw6

This Thursday and Friday, the UConn Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program celebrates its 50th anniversary. 🎂 The two-day program will travel backward in time -- to 1981, when Audre Lorde spoke on campus -- and forward, as scholars grapple with the future of the field. WGSS Interim Director Sherry Zane and Provost Anne D'Alleva, one of UConn's first jointly appointed WGSS faculty members, will kick off the event on Thursday morning.
