Michael Alexander has been hired to serve as the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's seventh chancellor.

GREEN BAY - A University of Wisconsin-Green Bay provost will take the helm as the University's seventh chancellor.

University officials announced Thursday that Michael Alexander, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW-Green Bay, has been hired to serve as chancellor beginning May 1. Alexander will replace replace Gary Miller, who left last year to become president of the University of Akron.

Alexander will oversee UWGB campuses in Green Bay, Manitowoc, Marinette and Sheboygan.

“While my position as chancellor may be new at the University, my passion and dedication for the people of this community are stronger than ever and my family is proud to call Green Bay our home," Alexander said in a statement. "With a growing academic portfolio, deep connections to the community and presence in the region, UW-Green Bay will continue to expand its impact on the population it serves."

He will earn $250,000 in his new role.

Alexander competed for the position against three other finalists: Mark Biermann, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Indiana's Valparaiso University; Teresa Flannery, a policy fellow for the Center for University Excellence at American University in Washington, D.C.; and Lori Vermeulen, former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Stockton University in New Jersey.

Alexander has served in his current role since July 2019, overseeing four academic colleges, the Weidner Center and UW-Green Bay libraries, among other facilities. He created the university's Office of Sustainability, helped expand its Continuing Education and Community Engagement program and built relationships with universities in Thailand.

Alexander has a rich background in music, as well. Before coming to UW-Green Bay, he worked as a music professor at multiple universities and directed the School of Music at the University of Northern Colorado. He also directed the Georgia Symphony Orchestra and in 2004 served as interim conductor for the Green Bay Youth Symphony.

“During Michael's tenure at Green Bay, he has demonstrated keen listening and engagement skills,” UW System President Ray Cross said in a statement. “His experience as a conductor has clearly enriched and influenced his ability to lead individual experts and professionals.”
