Position Information

New Hanover County is seeking a Public Health Director for the consolidated Health and Human Services agency.  Reporting to the Consolidated Health and Human Services Agency Director, this position is responsible for overseeing administration of all department programs to include personal health, environmental health, nutrition, school health, maternal health, child health, community health, counseling, epidemiology, lactation, health education, and health administration.  The selected candidate will serve as public health industry expert, guiding leadership as it navigates through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Duties include overseeing and preparing a budget of approximately $14.5M, implementing policies, interpreting and executing decisions made by the Board of Commissioners and the Human Services Board, identifying and responding to changes in policy, overseeing program expenditures, performing public relations duties by addressing questions and concerns, and overseeing department personnel management.  This position requires thorough knowledge of public and environmental health philosophies and practices, to include methods for eliminating health disparities in a diverse community.  The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships, strategic planning, and the ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions in a collaborative and transparent environment.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Public Health or related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible public health administration experience that includes three (3) years of management level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Compensation
The current salary range for this position is $97,484 – $165,722.
