REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Intern, Planning Section, for the Planning & Development Management Division:
 
General Description
This is planning professional work which provides a great opportunity for training in various areas of County government. Assignments serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to the County's organizational structure and many agencies.

The intern will assist the Planning Section Supervisor, Senior Planner, and the Division Director with monitoring implementation of the Broward County Comprehensive Plan policies; investigating sustainable development trends; conducting research/analysis and presenting on a variety of topics including, transportation, housing, land use, and demographics; and creating maps depicting related trends and/or analysis. The intern will assist administrative staff to provide customer service over the phone as well as making copies, scanning documents, and other clerical duties as assigned.   

Close administrative direction and supervision is received from a superior; emphasis is placed on training interns for continuing employment within the county or local government.
Work is reviewed through observation of performance, frequent conferences and reports

Performs support duties in an agency in order to gain knowledge, skills and professional experience.



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Currently enrolled in, or graduated from, a degree-seeking program from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in a field relevant to area of assignment.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
None.

Preferences:
GIS experience
Comprehensive Planning experience
Climate adaptation and sustainable development experience
Transportation Planning experience
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Applies research techniques and analytical methods to the study of administrative systems, organizational structures, policies and procedures related to the area of assignment.
 
Conducts special studies in conjunction with a project; analyzes data and makes recommendations based upon research.
 
Responsible for project assignments, research and analysis.
 
Provides information and assistance to the general public and other governmental agencies.
 
Prepares project reports and related data.
 
Provides administrative support to agency.
 
Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office equipment within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
