Philanthropy and COVID-19
These unprecedented times have led many in the social sector to call for a radical shift in the way that philanthropy operates in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Some of the most common themes include:
- Proactively communicating with grantees and asking what their communities need, then working with them to help them provide it.
- Providing additional resources to help both current and future grantees serve their communities, whether through a new response fund or by increasing current funding letters beyond the customary 5% spend.
- Advocating for broader changes to our social safety net, including paid family and sick leave for all workers.
- Standing strong against those practicing and promoting racism in response to COVID-19.
Many funders have also taken action during this time, by dedicating funding to COVID-19 and creating response funds specifically for this crisis. Others have pushed for the sector to continue to bring an equity lens to its work, as societal inequities will affect the impact of this pandemic on different communities.
