U.S. Department of Labor Awards Nearly $2 Million to Local Workforce Development Board to Assist Laid-off Workers in Kansas’ Aviation Industry

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of $1,921,422 in National Dislocated Worker Grant funding to the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas Inc. The project will provide reemployment services to individuals affected by aviation industry layoffs, including approximately 2,800 workers affected by dislocations at Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas.

The grant will allow for the immediate provision of the full complement of Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) employment and training services to workers in the Wichita area and surrounding counties.

Dislocated Worker Grants temporarily expand the service capacity of dislocated worker training and employment programs at the state and local levels by providing funding assistance in response to large, unexpected economic events that cause significant job losses.

The mission of the department is to foster, promote and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.
