GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Right-hander Carlos Carrasco sustained what the Indians are calling a “mild strain” of his right hip flexor while doing squats in the weight room on Wednesday at the team’s spring training complex.
The team listed him as “day to day.” More details on Carrasco’s injury and when he will be able to pitch again are expected when manager Terry Francona meets with the media later today.
The Indians are already down one starter as Mike Clevinger recovers from left knee surgery performed in the first week of the season. Carrasco, who missed three months of last season because of chronic myeloid leukemia, pitched to hitters for the first time on Tuesday and looked good.
Carrasco had an MRI on Wednesday, which was sent to doctors in California to be read.
The Indians open the spring-training season on Saturday against the Reds at Goodyear Ballpark. The regular season starts on March 26 at Progressive Field.
