Why this petition matters

Started by Jeffrey Melnick

Salesforce is a customer relationship management platform adopted by the Office of Graduate Studies at University of Massachusetts Boston during the 2018-2019 academic year. It has already been deployed across campus for a number of other of uses.  A number of graduate program directors voiced their concern about UMB's use of Salesforce given the widely-publicized fact that the company does business with Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The recent Wayfair Walkout in Boston has inspired renewed attention (https://wearyourvoicemag.com/news-politics/companies-profit-migrants-detention) to corporations like Salesforce that have contracts with CBP and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

UMB is a majority-minority campus, with a substantial number of immigrant—including undocumented—students. Doing business with Salesforce seems inconsistent with the university’s commitment to our students. As members of the campus community strive each day to make sense of the horrors being inflicted on families reaching the border of the United States and Mexico, the matter of sending UMB money to a major corporation that facilitates the work of Customs and Border Protection takes on an urgency that cannot be ignored or soft-pedaled.

The time for action is now. We, the undersigned members of the University of Massachusetts Boston community, urge the administration of UMB to break its contract with Salesforce unless the company can promptly provide evidence that it is developing a plan to cease doing work for Customs and Border Protection.
