Starting March 19, Birmingham Park and Rec’s 18 rec centers will provide lunches for Birmingham students

Birmingham, Alabama (March 18, 2020) – Birmingham City Schools students have been out of school since Monday, March 16 because of the COVID-19 threat, and the school system has been providing lunches for students at all school locations. Starting Thursday, March 19, the City of Birmingham and Birmingham Park and Rec will join the Summer Food Program in offering additional locations for Birmingham students to pick up sack lunches. Distribution at rec centers will last through the first week of April.

Students are to pick up lunches from rec centers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students are not to eat the lunches at the rec centers.

Lunches, which are prepared by the Birmingham City Schools Child Nutrition Program, will be distributed at the following Birmingham rec centers:

  • East Pinson Valley
  • Fountain Heights
  • Hawkins
  • Inglenook
  • M.L.K.
  • Memorial
  • North Birmingham
  • Willow Wood
  • Central Park
  • Ensley
  • Harrison
  • Henry Crumpton
  • Hooper City
  • Howze-Sanford
  • McAlpine
  • Roosevelt
  • Sandusky
  • Wiggins

**Please note that even though Birmingham rec centers will distribute lunches, Birmingham school locations will continue to provide lunches to students. The pick-up time for Birmingham school locations is 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Distribution is for students 18 years old and younger.

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin and Birmingham Park and Rec Director Shonae Eddins have said that what the rec centers and the Summer Food Program are doing is part of an ongoing effort to make sure that students receive healthy meals while school is out during the COVID-19 crisis.

Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring added that school systems from Jefferson County, Tarrant, Fairfield, Bessemer and Midfield are partnering with Birmingham City Schools to provide additional locations for students to pick up lunches. Regardless of where a child lives, a student may also pick up a lunch at additional locations in those school districts. Also, starting Thursday, March 19, Sixth Avenue Baptist Church will offer grab-and-go lunches for children, ages 4 to 18, in the community. Lunches will be distributed from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church.
