Mark A. Keroack, MD, MPH

Keroack Mark

Dr. Keroack provides strategic, financial, and operational oversight for all services at Baystate Health and its subsidiary health plan, Health New England. Under his leadership, Baystate Health has expanded the reach and variety of its clinical services, incorporating two new community hospitals and growing its outpatient practices across the region. The system has been a national leader in adopting population-based approaches to organizing and financing health care, emphasizing prevention, wellness, care integration, and cost containment under a global budget for the majority of its patients. During this time, Baystate Health also enhanced its role as the sole academic medical center of western Massachusetts, growing the scope, sophistication and reach of its tertiary services, elevating its research programs, and opening UMMS-Baystate, a regional medical campus focused on the training of primary care physicians. The system has continued its long tradition of receiving national and regional awards for outstanding performance in safety, quality, and innovation during his tenure. Dr. Keroack also provides strategic oversight for philanthropic and community benefits activities in support of the health system.

Dr. Keroack served as Baystate Health’s system chief operating officer from 2013 - 2014 and as its chief physician executive and president of Baystate Medical Practices from 2011 - 2013. He came to Baystate Health from University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) in Oak Brook, Illinois, where he served as senior vice president and chief medical officer. At UHC, a national alliance of over 100 academic medical centers, he oversaw programs for clinical and operational performance improvement, faculty group practice management, and patient safety. He also led UHC’s research to define the leadership and management practices associated with top organizational performance in quality care. Prior to his national work, he served on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts for 12 years, where he focused on HIV and AIDS care and won five annual teaching awards. Beginning in 1995, Dr. Keroack took on a more administrative role, serving as the first president of the 700-physician UMass Memorial Medical Group and the vice president of Medical Management for UMass Memorial Health Care. He has authored over 50 publications.

Dr. Keroack is a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Medical School and received his MPH from Boston University. He trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He serves on several local boards focused on improving the quality of life in his native Springfield and across western Massachusetts, as well as several state and national boards. He is married to Dr. Ann Errichetti, and they have two grown daughters now living in Massachusetts and Vermont.

Artenstein Andrew

Andrew W. Artenstein has served in senior leadership at Baystate Health (BH) since his arrival in 2012. He was recruited here from the Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University where he served as the physician-in-chief of Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island and the founding director of the Center for Biodefense and Emerging Pathogens from 2001-2012. From 2012-2016, he served as the chair of the BH Department of Medicine and the Tufts University School of Medicine chair of medicine at Baystate. In 2016 he was promoted to his current roles. He is responsible for all provider relationships within BH and also leads Baystate Medical Practices, the employed, academic provider group comprising 1,000 providers. In these roles he advances the vision of mutually beneficial, aligned relationships and a fully integrated system of health and care. In his roles as the BH chief academic officer and the regional executive dean of the UMMS-Baystate, Dr. Artenstein presides over the educational and research enterprises of BH.

Dr. Artenstein received his B.A. at the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY and his M.D. at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and his fellowship in infectious diseases and tropical medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), both in Washington D.C. He served as a physician scientist in the U.S. Army from 1986-1996. During this time, he was the head of the Section of Protective Immunity to HIV-1 within the Division of Retrovirology at WRAIR with vaccine field sites in northern Thailand and Washington D.C. Dr. Artenstein has published more than 100 scholarly works in the medical literature. He is the author and editor of Vaccines: A Biography, a book detailing the history of vaccines, and In The Blink of an Eye: The Deadly Story of Epidemic Meningitis, both published by Springer.

Kevin Conway

Senior Vice President and Chief Information & Digital Officer

Kevin Conway is the Chief Information & Digital Officer for Baystate Health. He guides the informatics and technology strategy, operations, and innovation vision, planning, design and deployment for the health system. Kevin works closely with the enterprise to deliver the mission and vision of Baystate Health doing so by providing service excellence and operational support of all technologies within the health system.

Kevin most recently was the Client Executive overseeing the clinical and digital transformation initiative for Northern Ireland. He was responsible for strategic direction and leadership of the deployment of the Epic Solutions as part of the overall Digital health strategy for the entirety of Northern Ireland, a global first for any EMR vendor.

He was previously the Chief Information Officer managing all facets of IT operations for all clinical and essential service departments at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Mercy & UPMC Magee-Womens Hospitals. In this role, Kevin was responsible for a large group of IT professionals including Data Communications, Telecommunication, PC Support, Programmers, LAN Administrators, System Analysts, and Clinical Informaticists to plan, design, and deploy future technology systems for existing and potential projects within the organization. Through these endeavors, delivering excellent IT services for provider, clinician, patient, and family best experiences.

Conway has over 25 years of healthcare information and technology experience. He is recognized for his focus on supporting the strategic vision by aligning technology with long-term strategic plans.

Kevin holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration focusing on Health Service Management from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh.

Tyonne D. Hinson, DrPH, MSN, RN, NE-BC

Senior Vice President, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, Baystate Health

Dr. Hinson is responsible for leading efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout Baystate Health and the communities it serves, through the proactive development of programs and initiatives that support the equitable delivery of healthcare services and eliminate disparities in health outcomes, as well as the creation of an inclusive environment for diverse caregivers who share a deep sense of belonging built on the principles of dignity and respect. Additionally, she will provide strategic leadership in implementation and execution of the long-term vision and goals focused on advancing public health, community health, and DEI across the enterprise.
Dr. Hinson, who served as nurse manager for the NICU for Baystate Health early in her career, re-joined the Baystate team in 2023 as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. She brings more than 20 years of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion through service in a various leadership positions in clinical and executive nursing, healthcare administration and international/global healthcare. Prior to rejoining Baystate, she most recently served as senior director of Nursing Diversity Initiatives at Boston Children’s Hospital. At BCH, she led departmental diversity and inclusion strategies to strengthen the enterprise health equity portfolio, as well as workforce advancement, mentorship, recruitment/retention, and professional development for 6,000 registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and interprofessional colleagues spanning numerous clinical disciplines.

Dr. Hinson earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Syracuse University, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree with a focus in Healthcare Administration from Villanova University, and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also holds Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She is an advisory board member of the Gillings School of Global Public Health at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and emeritus board member of Villanova University Fitzpatrick School of Nursing Board of Consultors. She is a 2019 graduate of the MGH Disparities Leadership Program and an awardee of the Dr. Terry Nance Award for Inclusive Excellence from Villanova University.

Raymond P. McCarthy, MBA, CPA

Ray McCarthy is responsible for the financial oversight of Baystate Health (Baystate), a $2.4B integrated delivery system in western Massachusetts. Baystate is comprised of four acute care hospitals with approximately 1,000 licensed beds, an employed multi-specialty practice group with 1,000+ providers, a visiting nurse and hospice organization, a captive insurance company and a managed care organization with approximately 200,000 covered lives. Baystate is also the only regional campus to the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

His responsibilities include providing system-wide vision, strategic direction, and operational leadership of all aspects of Baystate’s finance areas to ensure the overall financial health of the system.

Mr. McCarthy has almost thirty years of health care experience having first joined Baystate in 1993. Other roles he’s held at Baystate include the CFO of Baystate’s provider enterprise (Baystate Medical Practices) and CFO of Baystate’s joint venture Baycare Health Partners the entity that oversees Baystate’s value-based risk arrangements through an accountable care and physician hospital organization. Over the years, Mr. McCarthy has held other healthcare finance roles with CIGNA Healthcare and Yale New Haven Health System.

Mr. McCarthy is a CPA, Massachusetts Health Leadership College Fellow and holds an MBA and BA from Western New England University, Springfield, Massachusetts.

Kristin Morales-Lemieux

Kristin Morales-Lemieux is responsible for directing all Human Resources activities for the more than 13,000 employees across the Baystate health system, including talent acquisition, workforce planning, training and organizational development, compensation and benefit programs, employee and labor relations, employee engagement, and workforce health and wellness programs. Additionally, Kristin is responsible for leading the development and execution of the Workforce Strategic Plan which focuses on growing the workforce of the future through partnership with community-based programs and educational organizations to offer employment opportunities in the communities served by Baystate Health and to ensure a sustainable workforce into the future.

Kristin joined Baystate Health in 2017 as director Provider Compensation and held the position of vice president Human Resources Operations and Total Rewards from 2017-2020 and has more than 20 years of leadership experience in healthcare. From 2007 – 2017, she served as vice president/chief operating officer of Harrington Physician Services in Southbridge, MA.

Kristin earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Saint Joseph University and a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in healthcare leadership from Elms College where she was a member of Delta Epsilon Sigma.

Doug Salvador, MD, MPH

Doug Salvador leads the Department of Healthcare Quality at Baystate Health. He collaborates with colleagues throughout the system to promote a learning health system, develops strategy for quality and patient safety, and coordinates health care for the community. Using his training in medicine, engineering, and epidemiology, Dr. Salvador is focused on the redesign of health care delivery systems, diagnostic error, undergraduate and postgraduate education of quality and safety, and fostering a culture of patient safety.

A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University (biomedical engineering) and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Salvador trained in infectious diseases at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He practiced as a hospital epidemiologist after receiving a master of public health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. His post-graduate training includes Patient Safety Officer Training from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and service on the board of examiners for the Baldrige National Quality Program.

Richard Shuman, MD

Richard Shuman MD

A well-known, highly respected, collaborative, and trusted physician in our community, Dr. Shuman brings proven leadership experience, a demonstrated ability to lead medical groups in performing well in risk-based contracting, and a profound understanding of value-based care. He has deep knowledge of the local market coupled with strong relationships and understanding of the physician community. He has broad experience in healthcare and population health, and a vision for enhancing the value of Baycare to both providers and the community.

As healthcare continues to create new challenges, Dr. Shuman has adapted to the changes while inspiring colleagues, and providing a clear vision to enable organizational success. One of his most significant achievements has been to instill a “do the right thing” culture that is based on the core values of integrity and respect. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Shuman has served as a physician leader for large multispecialty medical practices in the Pioneer Valley and Connecticut.

Most recently, he served as the president of Trinity Health of New England Medical Group representing 1,000 providers. His experience includes working as a medical director in healthcare administration, the insurance industry, as well as providing direct patient care. Dr. Shuman was active in Baycare governance since 2009, including serving on the Board of Directors and as Chair from 2015 through 2017. He also served on the Health New England Board of Directors from 2016 to 2019 and held several leadership positions in healthcare of increasing responsibility.

Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Shuman completed his residency in internal medicine at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He received his MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he earned the Sandoz Award in recognition of superior academic achievement and contribution to healthcare, and he earned an A.B. in Biology and Art History at Harvard University. Dr. Shuman lives in Suffield, Connecticut with Elinor, his wife.

Sam Skura

Sam Skura

Sam Skura leads Baystate Medical Center and the Baystate Health Hospital Operations as the strategic and operating leader to advance transformative change in acute care across the system. Sam has a deep commitment towards quality and safety outcomes as well as the patient and family experience. He oversees all aspects of clinical care delivery and operations for five hospitals across the system, including Baystate Medical Center, Baystate Health’s 742-bed flagship hospital. He works closely with all aspects of the integrated healthcare delivery and finance system contributing positively to the Baystate Health strategy.

Sam Skura has an extensive background in hospital leadership and most recently served as COO at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. In previous roles, he served as senior vice president of Ambulatory and Clinical Services and chief administrative officer at Beth Israel Deaconess.

Prior to Beth Israel Deaconess, Sam was a vice president of Clinical Operations at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. He also held managerial roles at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Partners Healthcare in Boston and Fallon Healthcare System in Worcester.

He has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts, Isenberg School of Management, a master’s degree in Public Health from Boston University and a bachelor of arts and economics from Brandeis University.

Vanessa L. Smith, Esq.

Vanessa L. Smith, Esq., is a broad-based legal counselor with a depth of expertise in the range of issues that face health systems. She is responsible for the oversight of enterprise-wide legal, corporate compliance, risk management, and governance services. She oversees teams responsible for the delivery of legal services to Baystate Health and its affiliates, implementation and management of comprehensive system-wide compliance, privacy, and clinical risk management, and corporate governance programs, and the operation of Baystate’s wholly-owned insurance company, Baystate Health Insurance Company. She serves as the primary legal advisor to the President & CEO and the Board of Trustees.

Vanessa joined Baystate Health in 2016 as Associate General Counsel and became Vice President and Chief General Counsel in 2017. She is a trusted in-house counselor and strategic partner and has developed an experienced, responsive and well respected Legal Department team that adeptly supports the changing and diverse needs of the health system.

Prior to coming to Baystate, Vanessa was a partner at Bulkley, Richardson & Gelinas, in Springfield, where she was a member of the firm’s Health Law Practice Group. In that role, she provided legal support and guidance to Baystate for more than a dozen years on a wide variety of health care issues and built strong working relationships with leaders across the organization.

Vanessa holds a bachelor’s degree in French from Wells College and a law degree from Syracuse University College of Law. She lives in Holyoke with her spouse, Elizabeth Lehman.

Richard Swift

Richard Swift was appointed President and CEO of Health New England in October 2020. As President and CEO, Richard is responsible for the successful operation of Health New England and driving growth across the organization, financial and service excellence, and continued improvements in clinical quality with a focus on lowering the cost of care in western Massachusetts. He continues working to further Health New England’s mission of serving our members and improving the health and lives of the people in our communities.

He is an experienced Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer for provider-owned health plans and a senior health care executive with over 30 years of leadership with integrated delivery systems, health plans and provider groups throughout the country. Richard has served as the President of Medwise Partners, a health insurance consulting company he founded in 1996. In that capacity, he has served in numerous interim executive roles for regional health plans throughout the United States.

Richard hold a Bachelor of Science degree from Mercer University and an MBA in Health Care Administration from the University of Miami (FL).
