More than two-thirds of Americans disapprove of how President Trump is handling the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll.
The ABC-Ipsos poll showed 67% of respondents disapproved of how the president has handled the pandemic compared to 33% who approved. The numbers reflect the lowest approval rating since the question was first asked in March and an 8-point drop from mid-June. Trump’s highest approval rating on handling of the coronavirus crisis was in the pandemic’s early days, reaching 55% on March 18-19.
Seventy-eight percent of Republicans approve of the president’s handling of the COVID-19 response, compared to 26% of independents and 7% of Democrats. The latest numbers show a decline among Republicans compared to mid-June, when 90% thought Trump was handling the COVID-19 crisis well.
Fifty-nine percent of Americans believe the U.S.is re-opening the economy too quickly, compared to 26% who believe it is happening on the right pace. Huge differences are seen among the political parties, with 84% of Democrats believing Trump opened things up too quickly compared to 26% of Republicans.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted July 8-9 among a random sample of 711 adults. There is a margin of error of 4.1 points.
