Highest-level emergency surgery & trauma care

Nine in 10 Americans believe it is “extremely important” or “very important” to be taken by ambulance to a trauma center in the event of a life-threatening injury, even if it's not the closest hospital, according to a public opinion poll commissioned by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma and the Coalition for American Trauma Care. Yet, less than 8 percent of hospitals have a trauma center. Advocate Health Care brings the life-saving specialized care of trauma centers to communities across the Chicago area.

911 tips to remember

Most Americans don't realize that injury is the leading cause of death for children, youth and adults under the age of 34. When a life-threatening emergency occurs, call 911 for immediate medical attention.

  • Try to answer the 911 operator's questions as precisely as you can.
  • Don’t hang up until the operator tells you to do so.
  • Teach young children how to dial 911, and make sure they've memorized their address – including apartment number – and phone number.
  • A babysitter or other caregiver may need to call 911. Always leave a note at home with your home’s address and home phone number.
