Driver charged after fatal crash with Amish carriage that killed three children

A third child has died after the Branch County Sheriff's Office said a pickup driver rear-ended an Amish horse-drawn carriage Friday.

Authorities identified the pickup driver as 21-year-old Tyler Frye.

Officials said he was arraigned Saturday, June 8, 2019 and has been charged with three counts of operating while under the influence causing death, two counts of operating while under the influence causing serious injury and a felony weapons charge.

He is being held at the Branch County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Police said the crash happened on Kelly Road, south of Lester Road, in Algansee Township in Branch County Friday, June 7.

Two children, ages 2 and 6, were killed at the scene of the crash. Michigan State Police Sergeant Doug Schutter confirmed Sunday the third child, age 4, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and later died at the hospital.

A woman in the carriage also received serious injuries.

The injured passengers from the carriage were taken to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
