    • A total of 1,316 companies exported from New Mexico locations in 2016 (latest year available). Of those, 1,094 (83 percent) were small and medium sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees.
       
    • Small and medium-sized firms generated 40.6 percent of New Mexico's total exports of goods in 2016.

    New Mexico Depends on World Markets

    • The state’s largest market was Mexico. New Mexico exported $1.4 billion in goods to Mexico in 2018, representing 39 percent of the state’s total goods exports.
       
    • Mexico was followed by China ($1.1 billion), Japan ($241 million), Korea ($121 million), and Canada ($120 million).

    International Investment Creates Jobs in New Mexico

    • In 2015 (latest data available), foreign-controlled companies employed 18,000 New Mexico workers. Major sources of foreign investment in New Mexico included Canada, Germany and France.
       
    • Foreign investment in New Mexico was responsible for 3.2 percent of the state's total private-industry employment in 2015.

    New Mexico’s Major Metropolitan Areas Benefit from Exporting

    • In 2017 (latest data available), the following metropolitan areas in New Mexico recorded goods exports: Las Cruces ($1.4 billion), Albuquerque ($624.2 million), Farmington ($114 million), Santa Fe ($26.9 million).
