Global Learning Fund to help students expand horizons

Students looking to broaden their perspectives and experience other cultures through worldwide travel and educational opportunities will benefit from a new fund established by two senior administrators at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
The college’s first endowed Global Learning Fund features a financial commitment from Carolyn R. Strickland, vice president for enrollment management and associate provost, and J. Elliott Strickland Jr., vice president for student affairs.
Awards from the fund will be available to full-time Penn College students who demonstrate financial need, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and are participating in a Penn College semester exchange or short-term experience program – everything from providing dental and health care to clients in developing countries; to studying European architecture and art history; to experiencing firsthand the service and repair processes for prestigious automobile manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati; to exploring Mayan mathematics.
“The Stricklands’ desire to provide opportunities for students to learn through global exploration is inspiring,” said Loni N. Kline, vice president for institutional advancement. “We are grateful for their leadership and steadfast support of Penn College and look forward to the experiences students will gain through their generosity.”
“Supporting a fund for global experiences is very much in line with our values,” the Stricklands explained. “We both have had the good fortune to travel at young ages, and we credit those experiences for shaping many of our perspectives on the world. We recently introduced our daughter to the wonderful world of international travel.”
Global experiences available to Penn College students include semester exchange programs in Austria and Scotland and short-term experience programs in Central and South America, Italy, Europe and the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and France and Italy.
Megan M. Mecouch, a dental hygiene baccalaureate student from Peach Bottom, said her global experience, which involved delivering dental hygiene services to hundreds of children in the Dominican Republic, was life-changing.
“The experience I had in the Dominican ignited in me a fire for volunteer work that will continue to burn throughout my life,” Mecouch said. “Thanks to Penn College, I am elated to be able to bring these skills that were gained on the study abroad trip, my clinicals and my Resident Assistant position to the ‘real world,’ where I can put them to good use.”
