Van Gurp Tabbed SSC Player of the Year

Suka Van Gurp joined by Miriam Schmoll on 2019 All-SSC Teams

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Having reached the 30-win mark for the first time since 2014, the Nova Southeastern softball team added to its notable season on Thursday, as a pair of standouts were recognized on the All-Sunshine State Conference teams. Second baseman Suka Van Gurp became the fourth player in program history to be selected as the SSC Player of the Year, while sophomore pitcher Miriam Schmoll was named as a member of the All-SSC Second Team.

"I am extremely proud of Suka and Mim (Schmoll) for their accomplishments in order to be recognized amongst the conference," said Nova Southeastern head coach Julie LeMaire. "These two young ladies worked very hard to put the program in a better place, and they deserve to reap the benefits of that."

Inevitably placed on the All-SSC First Team as well, Van Gurp took the league by storm in her lone season with the Sharks. The native of Willemstad, Curacao ranked among the Top-5 in the SSC in nine statistical categories, finishing first in both RBI (44) and slugging percentage (.732). She tallied at least two hits in 17 games, and notched a multi-homer effort against Albany State. Van Gurp's Player of the Year award marks the first by a Sharks' player since Erika Garcia earned the honor five years ago.

"Suka's numbers and production speak for themselves with this honor," said LeMaire. "She is not only a very skilled player, but an amazing teammate as well. The leadership she provided our team this year will be very hard to replace, and makes this recognition even better."

Schmoll, meanwhile, led the way on the mound for Nova Southeastern in 2019. The University of South Florida transfer tossed a team-high 176.1 innings on her way to a record of 17-7. She racked up 22 complete games, including nine shutouts, and closed the year with a stingy 1.39 earned run average.

"Mim is one player that truly continued to get better throughout each outing of the season," LeMaire added. "To be recognized this early in her career is very exciting for the future of NSU Softball. We can't wait to see her continue to develop over future years!"

Tampa's Makaleigh Dooley garnered SSC Pitcher of the Year for the second season in a row. Freshman of the Year was handed out to Ashley Worrell of Rollins, with Florida Tech's Val Silvestrini chosen as SSC Coach of the Year.
