Sharks Gear up for Sunshine State Conference Championship Showdown

Racing action starts Friday at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota

SARASOTA, Fla. - For the seventh consecutive year, the Sunshine State Conference Rowing Championship will take place in Sarasota, Florida at Nathan Benderson Park. As a team, the Sharks have steadily improved week-to-week and are looking to carry that momentum from the past couple of races into some strong finishes at this year's conference championships.

"I am really looking forward to the competition tomorrow, especially given how strong the conference has become since Embry-Riddle was added a year ago," head coach Devin Fay said.

"We know Florida Tech is an exceptional group this year, but the second through fourth finishing positions will be tight. Just last week in the Varsity 4 at SIRA, less than four seconds separated our boat from Rollins and Barry. Whoever has the right pace on the day and puts together a good sprint will come out on top. I also hope we can showcase our depth in the second varsity four exhibition event," Fay noted.

"We have been back and forth with Embry-Riddle all year, while getting closer to catching Barry in the varsity eights. We are confident we can gain even more speed after last week's action at SIRA, since our newest line-up has gotten more time to gel, practice race specific moves and get more comfortable as a unit," Fay said.

The Sharks have earned six conference championships, including three in a row from 2007-09. As a program, NSU dominated the stretch from 2007-2014, as they captured the title six times in those eight years. The past two years have given way to a surge by Florida Tech as they look toward completing the three-peat, an accomplishment the Panthers achieved from 2003-05. Overall, NSU sits just one championship crown behind Barry and Florida Tech, which tied at the top with seven titles.

Racing will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the Varsity 4 Exhibition - the event schedule is posted below. Please note that the races could start earlier based on the weather conditions and forecast.
