Historic Postseason Run Ends in Elite Eight

Sharks suffer 4-0 defeat at Flagler on Sunday

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – What a ride it was for the Nova Southeastern women's soccer team in 2019. The Sharks set a new program, single-season record with 17 wins, and tallied the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victories while capturing an NCAA South Region title in the process. The postseason magic finally ran out on Sunday, though, as head coach John Constable's fell 4-0 at Flagler in the Elite Eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After minimal scoring chances for either side in the opening 20:21, Emma Heikkila nearly gave the Sharks an enormous boost, yet watched her right-footed strike from the top of the box ricochet off the crossbar and out of play.
  • NSU couldn't have asked for a much better defensive effort in the first half against the high-powered Saints. However, with less than three minutes prior to the break, the Sharks mishandled an apparent cross, as Flagler was able to cash in on a gifted goal.
  • Despite the momentum shift, NSU opened up the second half with plenty of energy, forcing the pressure on the Flagler backline. Chama Silva had a shot attempt saved in the 49th minute before consecutive Heikkila misfired two more attempts in the 58th minute.
  • The wind was taken out of NSU's sails, though, in the 62nd minute when Flagler's Hannah Dolores cleaned up a rebound to push the Saints' lead to 2-0.
  • From there, the Sharks visibly looked subdued, and the Saints were able to take advantage, as another score in the 73rd minute, followed by a penalty kick in the 76th minute, extended the margin to its eventual 4-0 final.
