Nova Southeastern Baseball Coach Brown to Step Down

The program’s third head coach closes his tenure with 316 wins

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After nine seasons at the helm, Nova Southeastern baseball head coach Greg Brown will resign his post leading the Sharks program later this year to pursue a hitting coordinator role in the Tampa Bay Rays Major League Baseball organization.

"The last nine-and-a-half years at NSU have been transformational, and my family and I will forever be Sharks," Brown said. "Our accomplishments over the years have been a byproduct of incredible student-athletes, assistant coaches and families that believed in our mission and process to achieving success. The culture that we have built will continue to serve the current student-athletes as they continue to raise the bar of what it is to be a Shark. I would like to thank our administration, Athletic Director Michael Mominey and President George Hanbury for their vision and support in building champions. My passion and love for NSU will be everlasting. Go Sharks!"

In his nine full seasons leading the Sharks, Brown has accumulated a record of 316-149 (.680), including a 147-80 (.648) mark in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) play, to record the program's second-most victories and claim NSU's highest winning percentage as a head coach.

Since taking over in Fort Lauderdale, Brown guided the Sharks to seven NCAA South Region Tournament appearances, including the program's first-ever berth back in 2011, and his Sharks were one of just two teams to reach the tournament in each of the past five seasons – averaging 35 wins per year since taking over from current Director of Athletics Michael Mominey in 2011.

"I want to thank Greg for his dedication, loyalty and commitment to excellence for nearly a decade as the leader of the NSU program," Mominey said. "His success on the field is well documented and speaks for itself. With that said, Greg Brown's most valuable impact during his tenure has been his leadership behind the scenes with his student-athletes and his coaches. That has been conducted privately without public accolade – that's the measure of a transformative leader."

In his most noteworthy season, Brown led the 2016 squad to the program's first-ever NCAA Division II South Region Championship with a win over Delta State in Tampa, followed by the first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship by defeating Millersville in Cary, N.C – finishing with a program-record 44 wins. One year prior, Brown coached NSU to a program-first Sunshine State Conference Championship, with a conference record of 18-6, and Brown earning SSC Coach of the Year. Under Brown's tutelage, the 2017 club was the NCAA statistical champion at 1.83 home runs per game.

Named the 2016 Division II National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and 2016 Florida Diamond Club Coach of the Year, Brown has had 18 players drafted in the MLB First-Year Player Draft and the Sharks saw a total 35 of his players sign professional contracts during his tenure, including a program-record 10 following the 2017 season. Brown coached nine All-Americans, three Rawlings Gold Glove recipients, four Regional Gold Glove recipients, the 2015 NCAA South Region Player of the Year, 23 All-South Region selections, the 2012 and 2015 SSC Players of the Year, the 2016 SSC Pitcher of the Year, the 2011 and 2019 SSC Freshmen of the Year and 45 All-SSC selections.

Maintaining Nova Southeastern's theme of 'leaving the jersey better than you found it', winner of the 2016 NSU President's Award for Excellence in Community Service, Brown's teams not only excelled on the field, but his commitment to developing young men and maintaining relationships with not only alumni but the local community has further strengthened the program. His Sharks have continued the efforts Mominey began with the Pembroke Pines Miracle League in 2006, as well as taking on other volunteer efforts with the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Toy Drive, youth and coaching clinics to local optimist clubs, canned food drives, Make-A-Wish, Career Day at local schools and players reading to children at the NSU Alvin Sherman Library reading program – meanwhile Brown was the central figure in the NSU Baseball Alumni Golf Classic, just completing its eighth iteration.

Mominey has initiated a national search for the program's fourth head coach as the Sharks look forward to its 33rd season.
