What better way to kick off the podcast than a conversation that focuses on the industry that Michelle Rathman has over 30 years of experience navigating...healthcare. In this first episode of the series, Michelle talks with Alan Morgan, CEO of National Rural Health Association and they cover a wide-range of topics focused on the state of rural healthcare in America today. From hospital closures to workforce shortages, EMS and OB deserts to the essential need for policies and resources that protect our rural safety net health systems, which, aside from providing life-saving care, are the economic engine of most every rural community in the United States. On Tuesday, NRHA launched its fifth advocacy campaign: "Urge Congress to Invest in Rural Health Infrastructure." Since 2010, nearly 150 rural hospitals have shuttered their doors, including dozens since the onset of COVID-19. Over 40% of rural hospitals are operating with negative margins and therefore are vulnerable to closure. NRHA is aware of the stressors that rural hospitals have been facing and is supportive of legislation to improve hospitals viability and ensure long-term success. We're proud to have worked with the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) to create a video that truly showcases the power of rural health. The Faces of Rural Health video features touching testimonials from NRHA staff members and individuals from all over the country who have been impacted by rural health in some way. We collected their stories and narrowed them down based on diversity of representation and story content, and recorded them either in-person or through a remote video recording software. With video being more important than ever, we knew this medium would be the perfect way to share these powerful stories because it showcases the raw emotions that a piece of paper couldn’t. Watch the video now at https://bit.ly/3TggcNY and see for yourself the impact of rural health on real people. #FacesOfRuralHealth #NRHA #PowerOfRural #VideoMarketing #RuralHealth

Strategic and highly collaborative mission-driven leader | President and CEO of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund
As part of the National Rural Health Association Rural Health Fellows Program, fellows develop a policy paper. The focus of my policy paper was the economic impact of health care on rural communities. The policy brief explore how work support programs - Medicaid, child care subsidies, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - stimulate the rural economy, improve health of rural residents and create economic opportunities for rural Americans. If you're interested, you can read the paper linked below. Also, visit the NRHA's website to explore the Rural Health Fellow's Program and to see the other papers developed by my colleagues in the fellows program. https://lnkd.in/gny4ZMwp
