The University of Miami continues to closely monitor Hurricane Dorian, which is currently located approximately 900 miles southeast of Miami-Dade County. The National Hurricane Center has given South Florida a 60 percent chance of experiencing tropical storm conditions and a 15 percent chance of experiencing hurricane conditions. The earliest reasonable time South Florida would experience impacts from the hurricane would be Saturday evening.

Due to the increasing threat from Hurricane Dorian the following actions are being taken to ensure the safety of the University community:

  • In an abundance of caution, the University will begin to shutter the Coral Gables, medical, and Rosenstiel campuses. Those actions will include putting in place storm shutters and positioning sandbags near doorways. All building will continue to operate normally.
  • The University Emergency Call Center will be activated at noon to provide ongoing information to the University community. The hotline number is 800-227-0354.

At this time all campuses, classes, events, and clinical activities continue to operate on a regular schedule.

Any decisions made regarding campus operations or class schedules will be immediately communicated to the University community via the Emergency Notification Network.

The University of Miami takes a proactive approach to planning for tropical storms and hurricanes. Units across the University are positioning resources in the event that the impact to South Florida grows and requires additional action.

The University community is urged to monitor the University’s Emergency Management social media accounts at www.facebook.com/UMiamiENN and www.twitter.com/UMiamiENN for any updates.

TROPICAL STORM DORIAN – ADVISORY 1
Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019; 11 a.m.

The University of Miami is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Dorian, which currently is located approximately 1,425 miles southeast of Miami-Dade County. Keeping the University community safe and informed are top priorities as we continue to track the progress of this storm.

At this time all campuses, classes, events, and clinical activities are operating on a regular schedule.

The official forecast keeps Dorian as a tropical storm as it approaches South Florida. However, long range forecasts have a wide margin for error, and it is still too early to tell if Tropical Storm Dorian will directly impact South Florida. If Tropical Storm Dorian continues toward South Florida, the earliest anticipated impacts to the area would begin late Friday, Aug. 30, 2019.

Based on the current intensity forecast, the University does not foresee a circumstance that would require a mandatory evacuation order for students on the Coral Gables campus.

The University will continue to actively monitor and assess the situation. Any changes to class schedules or University operations would be shared via the Emergency Notification Network or future Storm Alert emails.

Monitor the University’s Emergency Management social media accounts www.facebook.com/UMiamiENN and www.twitter.com/UMiamiENN for interim updates.
