IC president discusses college’s response to recent crises.

Ithaca College President Shirley M. Collado was interviewed on the Bloomberg Radio network daily program “Bloomberg Businessweek” on Friday, June 12.

In a live interview, Collado spoke with co-hosts Carol Massar and Jason Kelly about Ithaca College’s plans to open for in-person instruction on October 5. “We really believe that in order to deliver a residential education, we want the large experience of that to be in person,” said Collado. “And we thought that this would allow us to do that in a way that would give us the room to fully prepare for a really uncertain future.”

Collado also talked about the impact COVID-19 has had on the financial state of the college, as well as on both current and prospective students and their families.

“Family members are facing not only a real health crisis but financial challenges that will require more financial aid for students, more support,” said Collado. “There are students who are sitting all around the country and world right now that actually don’t have the advantages of all the kinds of things that a secure residential college environment offers.”

Collado said that the college has a responsibility to its students during this time of crises in our country. “I believe very firmly that if you’re in the business of educating young people from all walks of life and putting them together in an environment where they normally would not select each other as friends, we carry a great responsibility in creating a space that’s not just about talking, it’s about doing, it’s about having more responsibility beyond self,” said Collado.
