Pre-college programs at the University of Delaware are designed to promote a college-going culture through academic excellence, leadership development and an ethos guided by inclusion, integrity and innovation.

Our innovative and inclusive programs are designed not just for student success but for student excellence. That’s our goal.

 

Pre-college programming at the University of Delaware touches on nearly every subject area, giving students in middle school and high school the opportunity to develop their passions and intellectual curiosity while gaining new skills and meeting new friends from all backgrounds. Our excellent faculty and staff have developed specialized classes and programs to ensure that students are prepared to take on the college experience with confidence, every step of the way: from application to graduation.

High School juniors & seniors participate in Admission's Edge Program which prepares high school students moving into their junior or senior year for a future as a successful college student. Summer Bridge Program in Mathematics

Presented as a “visit to the teacher’s desk,” the Summer Bridge Program in Mathematics helps minimize students’ loss of proficiency over the summer by providing them with an instructor-led environment for reviewing and practicing skills learned over the previous year as well as receiving guided instruction on topics to be covered in the grade they are entering.

If you think that 4-H is just for rural kids, you’ll be surprised to find out that you’re wrong. Delaware 4-H has something for each of the over 35,000 young people who participate in 4-H each year throughout the State of Delaware.  4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization with nearly six million young people across the U.S. involved in experiences that develop critical life skills. 

4-H grows confident young people who are empowered for life today and prepared for careers tomorrow.  It is the place where learning is fun, whether it takes place in your school, at camp, in your community or at the University of Delaware. There are plenty of exciting adventures that you can have in your community, state, country and all over the world.

Environment, Climate and Ocean (ECO) Camp is an instructional camp for students entering grades 8 through 12, focusing on the atmospheric, oceanic, and biogeochemical processes at work in the Delaware Bay.

The Diamond Challenge is a global entrepreneurship competition for high school students around the world with $100,000 in awards.

Dual Enrollment & Continuing Education

Through established partnerships with local high schools, academically qualified juniors and seniors can participate in the University's Dual Enrollment Program, taking courses that allow them to concurrently satisfy high school requirements and earn University of Delaware credits. Courses are delivered on-site at local high schools, through interactive online streaming from UD’s Newark campus to Delaware high school classrooms, and online. High school students may also schedule an appointment with a Professional & Continuing Studies ACCESS Center advisor to discuss taking University courses as Continuing Education, Non-Degree students.

Entrepreneurial Ventures Summer Program

The Entrepreneurial Ventures summer program is a partnership between Horn Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware and Schoolyard Ventures, an organization that develops university-level learning opportunities for ambitious high school students. During the intensive two-week program, students will learn from experienced entrepreneurs about what it takes to identify and solve real-world problems. They will have the opportunity to develop and test their own ideas and build the skills and mindset of successful entrepreneurs. By the end of the program, they will be able to identify business opportunities, develop a plan for launching a venture, test their ideas in the real world, and present their ideas to potential investors and advocates. The program will culminate in a graduation event where students present their ventures, accomplishments and personal development experiences.

The Perry Initiative

At The Perry Initiative, we are committed to inspiring young women to be leaders in the exciting fields of Orthopaedic Surgery and Engineering. We advance our mission principally by running hands-on outreach programs across the country for women students in high school, college, and medical school.

Summer Career & Life Studies Certificate (CLSC) (Grades 10-12)

Summer CLSC provides rising Juniors and Seniors with disabilities the opportunity to test out college life while living on the University of Delaware campus for one week during the summer.  Throughout the program students engage in a series of individualized job shadowing experiences, course sit-ins, and workshops.  Following the week on campus, Summer CLSC staff collaborate with the student and his/her family and school support team to create and implement a post-secondary career/education plan.

Upward Bound Classic 

Upward Bound Classic provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance.  The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits.  Upward Bound serves high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree, and low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education.  The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.  All Upward Bound projects must provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature and foreign language.

Upward Bound Math/Science (UBMS) is a federally funded TRIO program under the U.S. Department of Education. UBMS provides assistance and guidance to high school students interested in obtaining a degree in the fields of math or science. In order to be eligible, students must be eligible for the program by qualifying as the first in their family to obtain a four-year Bachelors degree, or by meeting our income cap. There are two major components of the UBMS program: a summer residential program and academic-year programming. For six weeks in the summer, students take intensive classes in math, science, English, foreign language and technology, and attend study sessions with tutors. During the academic year, UBMS offers monthly workshops on careers, financial aid, study skills, and SAT preparation. Students also attend college tours and cultural trips.

Governor's School of Excellence

The Delaware Governor’s School of Excellence is a one-week summer residential program that brings together academically and artistically talented Delaware high school students who have completed their sophomore year. Students live in residence halls on the Newark campus and attend either the academic program or the visual and performing arts program. Students are nominated to participate in Governor’s School through their schools in a competitive application process.

SAT & ACT Test Prep.

The UD Professional & Continuing Studies SAT and ACT course is an intensive test prep program that provides students with the tools they need to prepare for and ace the SAT and ACT exam. The condensed format is a convenient way for students to develop essential test-taking skills and tools. Students are provided with an in-depth review of the exam materials, insight into strategies for succeeding on standardized tests, and a comprehensive study plan.

Fashion Open House


Each year, the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department offers a unique opportunity for high school junior and seniors interested in exploring our majors in Fashion Merchandising and Management and Fashion Design and Product Innovation. Prospective students will meet our faculty, tour our department, participate in workshops, interact with current students and learn more about the many opportunities our programs provide. It is a great time for high school juniors and seniors to sit with our current students and ask questions about our department, the University of Delaware, and college life! The Fashion Open House is normally scheduled each year in the Fall. Check back to our website for the specific day and time as well as registration information!
