Downloading an Item


Search Information

Displayed at the top of the full item list is the original search criteria that was supplied. For example, suppose that "graham, r*" is filled in the first text input box with Author/Related chosen from the pull down menu of search fields, that "83 or 52" is filled in the second text input box, with MSC Primary/Secondary selected. At the top of the full item you see:

Publications results for: "Author/Related=(graham, r*) AND MSC Primary/Secondary=(83 or 52)"

This indicates that you viewing a selected subset of the search for author/related Graham, R* and with MSC primary or secondary classification either 83 or 52.


Navigation

An individual full item can be retrieved from the headline list by clicking on the MR number. From the full item page you then have various navigation options located at both the top and bottom of the item. These navigation options allow you to browse through the individual full items without returning to the headline list page.
Up - takes you back to the headline list
Previous - takes you to the previous full item in the headline list
Next - takes you to the next full item in the headline list

Bibliographic Citation(s)

Each full item displays the following bibliographic information: Mathematics Subject Classification(s) (MSC) (if applicable), Author Name(s), Institution Code, Title, Language and Summary Language(s), Journal, Volume, Publication Year, Issue, Paging, Translation Journal and Issue (when applicable) and Series. Items without MSC codes include Database Expansion Items, DML Items, Thesis Items, and Preliminary Data.

MR Number
The MR Number is a number used to uniquely identify a specific record in the Mathematical Reviews (MR) Database. (See MathSciNet Field Help for additional information about the MR Number.)

The GetItem method uses the MR Number to allow mathematicians to establish direct links to individual MathSciNet records.

Item Types and Labels
There are seven types of entries with associated labels in MathSciNet.

Preliminary Data Item Prelim
Preliminary Data items are created from bibliographic data received directly from publishers or from data created at Mathematical Reviews as materials arrive. These potential MathSciNet items provide early information about new papers in mathematics while full processing, including author authority work and editorial decisions, is ongoing. Preliminary Data items are marked with Prelim. When processing is completed, Prelim is removed from those items that are selected for inclusion in the Mathematical Reviews Database.

Mathematical Reviews appreciates publisher delivery of this data, which makes these additional MathSciNet listings possible. Publishers interested in participating in the Preliminary Data program are invited to contact mr-librarian@ams.org.

Pending Item Pending
A pending item is one for which the full bibliographic treatment, including author authority work and MSC Classification, has been completed, but for which the review is not yet complete.

Reviewed Item Reviewed
A reviewed item is one for which the full bibliographic treatment, including author authority work and MSC Classification, has been completed, and for which there is a review. The review is in most cases a third party review and is in the other cases usually an author summary.

Indexed Item Indexed
An indexed item is one for which full bibliographic treatment, including author authority work and MSC Classification, has been completed. Indexed items will not be reviewed.

Database Expansion Item Expansion
These items represent an expansion of the scope of coverage by the Mathematical Reviews Database. Database Expansion items are not classified and do not have reviews. In every other respect they are treated just like all other items in the Mathematical Reviews Database. In particular, the authors are identified and the items have journal linking and original item linking (when available). These items can be identified in the bibliographic information by the text Database Expansion Item, which is presented at the bottom of the bibliographic data.


Since 2001 Database Expansion items have included journal publications in the areas that might be termed Applied Statistics. The inclusion of these items was in response to many requests from librarians and others for the kind of information that formerly was contained in the CIS subfile of MathSci tape distributions. Beginning in 2003, Database Expansion treatment was extended and applied to certain items in Computer Science not previously considered to be within the scope of the MR Database.

DML Item DML
These items are associated with the various digitization projects around the world characterized as the World Digital Mathematics Library (WDML). Mathematics Digitization projects are invited to contribute their bibliographic data to Mathematical Reviews. As the various sites contribute their bibliographic data to Mathematical Reviews, new MathSciNet items will be created for these items. These new items are searchable by title, author name, journal name, and publication year (and other journal-specific information) and provide links to the digitized original material. The majority of these items have publication date before 1940, but there can also be items after 1940. For example, some digitization sites include front matter material for journal issues, such as tables of contents, that would not have been indexed by Mathematical Reviews in the past. In order to expedite the inclusion of this new material as it becomes available, these items will not have author links initially. Thus, they will not be included in the list of items produced in clicking on an author name link, e.g. in another item or in an Author Database Search. However, the author name is searchable as a string in the Author or Author/Related field in Full and Basic Search. Mathematical Reviews hopes to complete full author authority work on these items over time.

Because all the bibliographic data will come from the digitization site, these items will not be classified. Each DML Item will show the source of the contributed bibliographic data. Thesis Item Thesis

These items represent Ph.D. theses whose bibliographic data have been contributed by an external source. They are not included in the list of items produced by clicking on the author name and are not classified. However, they do appear in an Author or Author/related Database Search. Links to the thesis and its source are provided.

Author Name(s)
Names are displayed in the bibliographic information as: lastname, firstname, middlename or initial(s). Click on an author name to retrieve a headline list of all papers by that author, in the sense of Author/Related.

Institution Code
Institution Codes are codes used in the Mathematical Reviews Database to identify locations of authors as given in their works. Institution Codes are available for authors of most MathSciNet items from 1980 to the present; institution information is not available in records from 1940 to 1979.

Click on an institution code to retrieve a full institution address. The institution is the institution listed as the author's affiliation on the given item. For current author address information, refer to the Combined Membership Listing (CML).

Title and Language Information
The original title of an item is given if it is in English, French, or German. If the item is a paper, only a translated title is provided for languages other than English, French, or German.

If the item is monographic, the original title (or its transliteration) is given, with an English translation. The language in which an item is written and the languages of any available summaries are given in parentheses following the title.

Journal
In MathSciNet, full or abbreviated journal names are available for all items from 1980 to the present. Prior to 1980 only journal name abbreviations are included.

Click on a journal name to retrieve bibliographic information about that particular journal, including full name, issues per year, publisher, and ISSN number. In addition, links to lists of indexed items in issues of that particular journal are presented. (See MathSciNet Field Help for additional information about journal names.)

Volume, Publication Year, Issue and Paging
The issue number links to a headline list of indexed items from that issue. If there is no issue number, the year will be a link to the list of indexed items.

Translation Journal and Issue
Bibliographic information concerning the availability of a translation is added for those items in foreign-language journals for which there is a cover-to-cover translation. Occasionally the translation information is not available when the item is first entered into the MathSciNet Database, but is added later.

Series
For book series, full series titles or abbreviations are available in MathSciNet.

Click on a series name to retrieve information about that particular series, including full name, issues per year (if available), publisher, publisher address and ISSN number. (See MathSciNet Field Help for additional information about series names.)

Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC)
MSCs are codes used to categorize most of the items in the Mathematical Reviews Database. The current classification scheme is composed of five-character identifiers, each corresponding to a discipline of mathematics. (See MathSciNet Field Help for additional information about the MSC.)

Each classified item in the Mathematical Reviews Database receives a single primary classification. Many classified items also receive one or more secondary classifications. The secondary classifications, if any, are in parentheses. Click on the MSC link to retrieve descriptions of each of the classifications. Note: Database Expansion Items, DML Items, Thesis Items, and Preliminary Data are not classified.

References

Reference lists from the original paper are available for recent papers from selected journals (see reference list journals for a list of these). The reference list appears at the end of the item, immediately after the review if there is one and after the bibliographic information otherwise. The references appear in a similar format and with the same data as in the original item. (In particular, errors in references in the original item are not corrected.) A matching program is used to identify, if possible, each reference list item with its MathSciNet entry. The MR Number follows the reference and is linked to the corresponding MathSciNet full item. Reference list items that are preprints may match published items in MathSciNet. Because of the possibility of incorrect matches, the MathSciNet link is prefaced with cf.

Reference lists may be displayed or suppressed as a preference.

Reference Citations

To the right of the bibliographic information is a box titled CitationsFrom References  is linked to the headline list of those MathSciNet items whose reference lists include the on-screen item. The list of headlines can be used in the same way as any other search result. (If there is only one reference list citation, the full item with that reference list is displayed.)

Note that the Reference Citations are limited to those items that include a full reference list in MathSciNet. As further reference lists are added, the number of reference citations will grow.

Review Citations

When the MathSciNet item being displayed is cited in other reviews, a From Reviews link is provided in the Citations box. Clicking on the link yields a headline list of the items whose reviews include a citation to the on-screen item. The list of headlines can be used in the same way as any other search result. (If there is only one review citation, the full item with that review is displayed.)

Review Text

For those items having a review, the full text of the review is displayed in HTML using the MathJax rendering of the LaTeX-encoded mathematical expressions. For examples of MathJax rendering in MathSciNet, see MR3401119, MR3338633, MR3299602 and MR3304609. While MathJax produces beautiful mathematical typesetting in all modern browsers (Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer) and works well with most reviews, it does have a few limitations at the present time (2016). In cases where MathJax cannot process a string containing unsupported commands, the associated source code fragment is provided (as in MR1375336). The complete typeset review can still be viewed by selecting its PDF counterpart, which is considered the version of record, via the pull-down menu or the PDF link near item's bibliographic heading. The pull-down menu gives both PDF and PDF for printing forms.

Downloading an Item

Citations and full items can be viewed/downloaded in various formats. PDF format can be obtained from the PDF in a headline list, as well as in the full item. Formats for full items include PDF, DVI, and PostScript. Formats for citations include BibTeX, AMSRefs, EndNote and MR Citation. Viewers are required for some formats.

Select the desired format from the pull-down menu.

Once you have retrieved the item in the desired format, use the File | Save As function in your browser to download the file. To download multiple citations use the clipboard feature.
