Ready to Engage Male Allies and Advocates? Take the Quiz!

With the #MeToo and #MentorHer movements in the news, many men are asking, "I want to be an ally. What can I do to better to support women?" The articles this week address some ways that men can recognize gender bias at work and act to make changes.

Topic 1 discusses the inequitable distribution of office housework and glamour work, and how the difference impacts women and people of color and their ability to rise to senior positions.

Topic 2 takes a humorous look at what it's like to be a woman in a male-dominated industry. Considering a female perspective can help male allies to examine  stereotypical thinking and take steps to disrupt bias when they see it.

Topic 3 gives specific ways to create more inclusive workplaces with practical suggestions for male allies to incorporate the tips.

Finally, I recently partnered with Rachana Bhide, founder of The Corner of the Court Project, success stories of male allies shared by women, to create the Male Advocacy Profile (MAP) tool. This short quiz is designed to help men determine where they are on the male ally continuum in terms of their beliefs (advocacy) and the ways they act on their beliefs at work (activism).

I need you to do me a HUGE favor! Share the MAP assessment with your male colleagues and drop me a line with your feedback. Of course, you should also take quiz!

Glamour Work vs. Office Housework

Not all assignments are equal, according to this Harvard Business Review article. Glamour work sets you up to become a senior leader at the top of your company, Office housework is necessary but unsung. Who do you think gets assigned more office housework and less glamour work? Women and people of color. What can management do to close the gap?

QUESTIONS:

  • Discuss this with your male colleagues. Do they think it's true?
  • Have you witnessed these assignments being unevenly distributed?
  • What role can you play with your management to redistribute tasks more evenly?

What It's Like to be a Woman at a Tech Conference

Calling all male allies! A female developer humorously writes about the assumptions that are made about her due to her gender and how she handles it while remaining approachable and educating the men in her field.

QUESTIONS:
  • Have you seen, experienced, or made these type of assumptions about females before?
  • How can you avoid giving into the stereotypes?
  • Can you incorporate this information into your next meeting or event?

Diversity in Tech: 3 Ways to Create a More Inclusive Workplace

This article in Medium provides three ways to improve inclusiveness in the workplace and practical suggestions for male allies to put the tips into practice.

QUESTIONS:
  • What's one thing you can do to diversify your own network to include people who are not like you?
  • What's one way to more fairly distribute the office housework at your company?
  • How can you ensure that women's voices are heard at meetings?

"Having a man speak at a women's leadership event was a little different for us, but we knew Jeff's work was around engaging men in the joint effort to advance women in the workplace and we were confident in his ability to fill the room. And fill it he did. We should have done two sessions!"
