March 13, 2018

As many parents and students know, a National School Walk Out is being promoted for tomorrow March 14 by liberal organizations throughout the nation. This walkout is about passing more gun control measures; but sadly organizers are trying to mislead students and families to think that this event is simply a time to honor victims. As the main organizer stated to Fox News, the walkout is to “protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods.”

National School Walkout planned by students worldwide after Parkland shooting

So this is clearly not just about remembering students with prayer or honoring their memories. It is about promoting liberal political response to weaken our Second Amendment rights nationwide.

Women's March Youth Empower is the main organizing group of this walk out. Many other gun control political organizations are supporting this event. They include but are not limited to, Voices for Hillary, Moms Demand Action, and Southern Poverty Law Center. School administrators have sent out announcements usually to avoid legal liability, but parents need to be aware that the event itself is political, not educational, in nature. In addition, no school district is required to participate or encourage this political position on guns or to promote liberal activism.

Students have a constitutional right to free speech; but no student, teacher, administrator, or family should be pressured to participate or promote this event. This walkout is being presented to many Student Government Association leaders and administrators as a 17 minute memorial to the 17 Parkland students who were killed while they were defenseless in their public school.  Other administrators are recommending class discussions on school safety.

Parents have the right to object to schools promoting such events at their schools. Parents and students have First Amendment rights as well to disagree with any gun control political event and to not participate.  Parents have the right to challenge any benefits, academic or otherwise, which come from students participating in this liberal political event.

We are sending this alert to encourage parents to find out what activity will take place at their schools and to discuss options and issues with their own students so that they can exercise their First Amendment rights and beliefs at their school.  Following are suggested questions for discussion tonight:

What is the purpose of the Second Amendment? Why was it included in the Bill of Rights?

What can I do to help with school safety at your school?  (Here is an article from Eagle Forum of Alabama on what is being considered in that state.)
  • Do gun-free zones and more regulations stop shooters?
  • How as your parent can I be more involved in your education on a daily basis?
  • Do you feel pressured by your school or peers to join the walkout? Do you know what it is really about?
  • What role do faith and love play in reducing violence in our communities?
May God bless you and your families.
