SOAR Online is jointly provided by the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The module is a collaboration between the Administration for Children and Families Office on Trafficking in Persons and the HHS Office on Women’s Health, supported by the National Human Trafficking Training and Technical Assistance Center. The SOAR trainings are developed in collaboration with subject matter experts in the field, those with lived experiences, and partner organizations.

SOAR Online is a series of CE/CME training modules that you can complete whenever, wherever you like. The modules discuss the SOAR framework and how to apply it where you work to identify individuals who are at risk, currently experiencing, or have experienced trafficking and connect them with the resources they need.

SOAR Online is designed to educate health care providers, social workers, public health professionals, and behavioral health professionals on how to identify and respond appropriately to individuals who are at risk of or who have experienced trafficking. The target audience includes physicians, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, registered nurses, dentists, psychologists, social workers, case managers, school counselors, public health professionals, health education specialists, and allied health professionals.

Available SOAR Online Modules

SOAR to Health and Wellness Module

The SOAR framework is a trauma-informed, culturally and linguistically appropriate response to human trafficking. It provides a quick mental reference for professionals to keep in mind the best way to help individuals who are at risk, currently experiencing, or have experienced trafficking. The 2019 version of this module is also available in Spanish. However, the Spanish version is not eligible for CE/CME credits.

After completing the SOAR to Health and Wellness module, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the types of human trafficking and potential risk factors
  • Identify individual and environmental indicators of trafficking
  • Screen and identify individuals who may have experienced trafficking
  • Utilize a trauma-informed, person-centered, multidisciplinary approach
  • Assess the unique needs of individuals who have experienced trafficking
  • Deliver appropriate services to individuals who have experienced trafficking
  • Share the importance of trafficking awareness and responsiveness with others in your work environment

This module will take approximately 1 hour to complete.

Trauma-Informed Care Module

Anyone can experience trauma. Individuals who have been trafficked have often experienced trauma repeatedly and cumulatively over their lives. In this module, we discuss how to recognize the signs of trauma and deliver trauma-informed care to your patients and clients. The 2019 version of this module is also available in Spanish. However, the Spanish version is not eligible for CE/CME credits.

After completing the Trauma-Informed Care module, learners will be able to:

  • Recognize the signs of trauma exposure that individuals who have experienced trafficking may present
  • Describe the impact trauma can have on individuals who have experienced trafficking
  • Define trauma-informed care
  • Identify basic trauma-informed interventions
  • Apply a trauma-informed approach to working with individuals who have experienced trafficking

This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Module

Individuals who have experienced human trafficking come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and speak many different languages. In order to work with such a diverse population, it’s important to use culturally and linguistically appropriate services. The 2019 version of this module is also available in Spanish. However, the Spanish version is not eligible for CE/CME credits.

After completing the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services module, learners will be able to:

  • Define health equity and describe how culture and language are related to health inequities and health disparities that affect health equity
  • Identify characteristics of cultural and linguistic competence and the impact of each on health equity
  • Apply Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards and exhibit cultural awareness when interacting with individuals who have experienced trafficking

This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

  • Recognize possible indicators of trafficking in behavioral health settings
  • Identify trauma-informed screening tools and techniques for use by behavioral health professionals
  • Develop a trafficking response protocol for your organization
  • Assess the needs of individuals who are at risk of trafficking or who may have experienced trafficking and coordinate services within a multidisciplinary network of service providers

  • Recognize possible indicators of trafficking in public health settings

  • Assess the needs of individuals who are at risk of trafficking or who may have experienced trafficking and coordinate services within a multidisciplinary network of service providers

This module will take approximately 1 hour to complete. There is no fee for this educational activity.

Individuals who have experienced human trafficking or are at risk of human trafficking access a variety of services. In this module, we build upon the SOAR to Health and Wellness, Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services, and Trauma-Informed Care modules to provide school-based professionals with tailored information on how to identify and respond to human trafficking within their field.

After completing the SOAR for School-Based Professionals module, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the types of trafficking in the United States
  2. Recognize possible indicators of trafficking in school settings
  3. Describe the importance of utilizing a trauma informed approach when addressing human trafficking in the school setting
  4. Develop a trafficking response protocol for your organization
  5. Assess the needs of individuals who are at risk of trafficking or who may have experienced trafficking, and coordinate services within a multidisciplinary network of service providers

This module will take approximately 1 hour to complete.

This course is not eligible for CE/CME credits. SOAR for Native Communities (CE/CME credit not provided)

Individuals who have experienced human trafficking or are at risk of human trafficking access a variety of services. In this module, we build upon the SOAR to Health and Wellness, Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services, and Trauma-Informed Care modules to equip those serving Indigenous populations to better understand the issues surrounding human trafficking and its impact in American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.

After completing the SOAR for Native Communities module, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe historic factors that contribute to the trafficking (both labor and sex trafficking) of Indigenous populations​
  2. Describe trafficking in Native communities​
  3. Identify indicators of trafficking in Native communities​
  4. Describe trafficking resources relevant to Native populations ​
  5. Describe methods for honoring cultural practices while providing support to individuals who have experienced trafficking​
  6. Explain ways to strengthen cross-jurisdictional collaborations to build comprehensive responses to trafficking in Native communities

This module will take approximately 1 hour to complete.

If You Want Continuing Education Credit

To see types and amounts of credit available, check the modules listed above. Complete accreditation information are included in each module.

  • Participants must have registered online .
  • Participants must read the learning objectives and planner disclosures and study the entire educational activity.
  • Participants must complete the post-test with a score of 75% or better and the activity evaluation form.
  • ACPE: Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians must provide their NABP ePID and date of birth in MM/DD format to receive credit.

Request for Credit

A statement of credit will be issued only upon completing the post-test with a score of 75% or better and the activity evaluation along with meeting the requirements as outlined. At the end of each module, you will be provided an acknowledgment of your participation along with instructions on how to obtain your official statement of credit.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Confidential information will only be disclosed as it is required under Federal, state, and local human subjects laws and regulations. Personal identifiers will not be collected to evaluate any SOAR Online module. Usernames are never associated with the evaluation data. Evaluation findings are stored within the learning management system in an account accessible only by the evaluation team members with a username and password. All data will be aggregated and/or presented as themes and no personal identifiable information will be reported.

Technical Requirements for SOAR Online

SOAR Online is an Internet-based, online training. You will need a computer that has Internet access to complete each module. SOAR Online can be used with a MAC or PC. We recommend using the most recent version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer version 9 or higher. Some features and functionality may not work in browsers that have not been updated. Specific hardware/software requirements include:

  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP SP22
  • Processor: 550 MHz or faster (1.2 GHz or faster recommended)
