COMMUNITY VOICE KLA Schools of

Opens Early 2020

S W E E T WA T E R

Opening in early 2020, KLA Schools of Sweetwater will cater to children ranging from infants to pre-kindergarteners with a unique learning environment based on the Reggio Emilia approach, a teaching philosophy that originated in Italy after World War II. As the first KLA Schools franchise in the Austin area, KLA Schools of Sweetwater will introduce STEM and Art Ateliers. Atelier is a French word for studio, and these Ateliers will serve as learning extensions outside of the classroom. The STEM Atelier is designed to inspire kids to explore and collaborate in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and math. In the Art Atelier, students will creatively interpret and express their imaginations in 2D and 3D media such as paint and clay. The Piazza will be a common place of meeting with furniture imported from Italy. Featuring a layout that has a pedagogical, or teaching, connotation, the Piazza will support the formation of relationships and public identity. All facets of the school’s curriculum are inspired by the historically proven Reggio Emilia approach, named for the Italian village where it originated. The approach strives to educate the whole child in academics and extracurricular activities such as music, foreign languages, martial arts and dance. Beyond academics, the approach focuses on building social-emotional intelligence through

real-world experiences. It has been proven to help develop self-confidence, self-regulation, superior critical-thinking abilities, empathy, mindfulness, and invaluable problem-solving techniques. The school will also include a 17,000-squarefoot outdoor area, with natural and organic playground equipment and structures designed to develop motor skills and stimulate creativity. The outdoor area will include a mini golf course and a preserved natural tree imported from Canada, offering kids the chance to climb and explore. Beyond the Pre-K level, the school plans to add a transitional level for kindergarten-bound students for Fall 2020.

For KLA Schools of Sweetwater owners Sanam and Anup Madampath, opening the school fulfills a dream they’ve had since moving to Sweetwater in 2018 with their daughters, Sanjana and Aria. Sanam, who worked for five years as a certified Montessori teacher locally, will direct the daily operations of the school. She also holds a National Administrator Credential. “From the very beginning, Sweetwater was a very warm and welcoming community, where your neighbors truly want to know you and help you,“ said Sanam.

The school’s approximately 11,500-square-foot building will include nine classrooms. In addition to certified teachers, the staff will include an onsite chef who will prepare healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks.

News from Newland HOW SWEETWATER PRESERVES OUR:

Hill Country Trees

Drive through Sweetwater, and you can see large trees standing majestically in front of many homes.

Hill Country landscape,” said Rainer Ficken, vice president of development for Newland.

Look a little closer, and you might notice that quite a few homes and streets in Sweetwater don’t follow the typical uniform layout you find in many communities. Instead, streets wind and curve gently around trees, and homes seem to be designed and placed on their homesites so they can co-exist harmoniously with big, beautiful trees. This is no accident. Sweetwater has one of the strongest tree preservation programs of any community in Austin, with developer Newland working closely with homebuilders to preserve as many significant trees as possible. If a major tree appears to be in the path of construction, Newland attempts to work with the builder to reposition the home and to save the tree. “It’s a partnership with the builders to help preserve Sweetwater’s beautiful

In one of its newest neighborhoods, Hidden Springs, streets were laid out to preserve as many large existing trees as possible. The neighborhood was also designed to enhance access and views for the new Llano Stagecoach trail, which runs alongside it. “Sometimes moving a street just a few feet can save one or more significant trees,” Ficken said. Sweetwater also adds new trees, such as the beautiful 30-foot-tall Shumard Red Oak tree that now crowns the hilltop of the community’s newest park. In one of Sweetwater’s earliest stages of development, the developer worked carefully to save a rare Texas Madrone tree, estimated to be 800 years old. Today, this tree is one of the natural highlights along Sweetwater’s growing trail system.
