Loyalty is definitely a fitting title for this book.
Bethany Kris does an excellent job of weaving together a story that demonstrates the loyalty people have; to themselves, their family, the “family” in the mafia sense, your spouse, your partner, your friends. Yet what happens when that loyalty is turned on its head and instead is used as a weapon to control and manipulate? What if that loyalty is used as a tool for betrayal? And how do you know which is which?
John, out of prison after a three year stint, finds himself questioning those around him; the people who say they support him, yet are constantly trying to control him. His familial relations are further strained when he begins dating Siena, the daughter of a family who are generations-long enemies.
Adding more complexity is John’s own battle with bipolar disorder. The need to balance medications and therapies is an ongoing juggling routine. There is no stopping for a break or quiet time. It’s relentless. And when he takes his eye off the proverbial ball, it can all come crashing down.
While I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the portrayal of bipolar in this book, I do feel the author has done a terrific job in describing John’s thoughts and actions as he tries to live with and control the disorder. I felt his lack of control, his confusion, his anger, his suspicions, his hyperactivity, his tiredness, his doubts, his uncertainties. Having to live like this every day feels exhausting and I was only reading a book!
I do think this book is somewhat more about John that it is about John and Siena, but that’s not to say there is no romance. John and Siena’s serendipitous meeting on a bus is the start of a relationship that brings with it both good and bad; they may be in love but behind them are families who have no lost love for each other. Let’s not forget the families, mafia families at that, people!
Loyalty was an intense read, but heavens, it was a fulfilling one. I can’t wait for book 2!

Loyalty (John + Siena Book 1) Kindle Edition
Fresh out of prison after serving a three-year sentence, Johnathan Marcello wants to get back to normal business as a mafia capo. The rules set out for him are clear—keep out of trouble, maintain a low profile, and stay stable. But stability is a delicate balance for a man like John, and shaky ground is only a single step away.
A chance encounter with a blue-eyed woman might just change his whole world.
Siena Calabrese’s life revolves around cooking numbers, and scrubbing books clean. After all, a girl is only useful to men in the mafia, if she isn’t totally useless. As long as she does what they want, then she can maintain the illusion of freedom. But illusions are only delusions in the grand scheme of her life, and reality is far more dangerous.
A man with secrets might just be the one thing she didn’t know she needed.
In this life, family is everything. Or, that’s how it should be.
Distrust.
Love.
Betrayal.
Loyalty.
Mix it all together, and it makes for a volatile city.
A war is coming.

I’ve loved every couple in this Mafia series but John and Siena now have a special place in my heart.
Normally with a Cosa Nostre book I kind of know what to expect however I was not ready for the feels this book gave me it gave me tingles and goosebumps.
John as a character is fascinating, he’s a man with so many responsibilities, he has so many people depending on him. I understood why his family did the things they do but they made him feel like a burden like he’s an inconvenience. So many times I wanted to reach into the pages and just hold him.
Siena is perfect for him she knows what’s expected from the Mafia life and she’s a strong minded woman. The thing I loved the most was that she saw John for him not a man with all the issues he has it was beautiful to read.
As with all these books the story is complex full of all the drama and twists that I’ve come to expect. Bring on the next for this couple because I can’t wait .

I really love diving into a great Mafia story and Loyalty didn't disappoint even though it was just a bit different from the norm.
I rally loved John and Siena. I felt they were perfect for each other.
With John suffering from being Bipolar and Siena was always there for him and giving him unconditional love.
With a rollercoaster of emotions this book highlights the daily struggles of a serious disorder.

I knew, just knew, I'd enjoy John & Siena's book.
I found myself sympathetic and empathetic with the trials and tribulations of mental health as detailed in this great story.
Another to follow, "Disgrace" and I am so happy we constantly are exposed to previous characters from other books. It's a treat!
Highly recommend this series, this author and anything Bethany-Kris has had a hand in!

John and Siena's story is one I've been anticipating for a long time! They did not disappoint. There was tension, secrets, the lines between enemies and family were blurred, the lines between betrayal and loyalty were crossed.
The Marcello's and Calabrese family have bad blood but John and Siena only see each other.
Their romance was one I adored and their story is completely captivating!
I am looking forward to the next one!

It’s always about the Family
He’s a slave to his secret
And with a deep hatred of all things Calabrese.
Then he meets her
And they discreetly meet from prying eyes of the Family
He’s safe and sound with her
As all he needs is her sweet heart
Their secret intertwined
Or so he thinks.
As it’s always about the Family
Will they tear them apart?
Some may say - well, well, well, if it isn’t the consequences of his own actions.
I don’t.
And be warned, I will shoot anyone that thinks that of John. (yep, I’m reading too many Bethany-Kris’s books 😂).
This is John and Siena’s story, the Capo and the Principessa della mafia.
John’s bipolar dictated this storyline. He has never taken the easy route and that is not all down to his mental health. Sometimes I felt he was more multipolar than bipolar, but either way, the author handled his mental health issues not only expertly but with great compassion too, so well done author.
As you may have gathered already, John falls in love with an enemy’s daughter. The Calabrese’s are sly, untrustworthy but with John not taking his meds, the sly innuendos that Siena’s father plants in his head, starts taking seed. Will John water them and let them grow, or cut them out like the weeds they are? Read to find out...but be warned, this is a two booker, so lots of questions and no answers, but book 2 is available and I’m off to read it now to find out how this is going to play out? war on the streets? war within John’s own Family? Or something else entirely? you never know with this author 😁
I’m rewarding my loyalty with 5*
P.s. hate to admit this, but Andino is growing on me...watch this space

I hate a cliffy but I love this author and her books. This book was different with John having bipolar and you don't see that sort of stuff in may of the mafia books. I liked it. Great book and it will hopefully be a great series. Now we just have to wait.

Emotionally intelligent

Although essentially this is about two mafia families the Marcellos and the Calabrese. It was about the importance of loyalty and how blood is not necessarily thicker.
The description of John's battle with bi-polar was so beautifully written his internal voice gave an eloquent understanding into worsening symptoms and the side effects from the drugs blunting his perceptions along with the daily struggle that he had with his illness. How he felt his family treated him because of previous behaviour and his developing relationship with Sienna whose family had a previous history with his. The manipulation and isolation was fraught with emotional turmoil all through he had Sienna who was never put off by his diagnosis.
Then there was Sienna who basically was used for her talent with numbers by her family to cook the books. Lonely within her family. Her father using her as a pawn to cause chaos and confusion.
I am eager to see the direction Bethany-Kris will take us in book 2 Disgrace ( I have pre-orderd a copy). An author who is not afraid to write about a difficult subject with such emotional intelligence and insight.

Bethany Kris I want to thank you for not only another original and fantastic story but for bringing light to something so taboo. Mental health. This story really hit close to home for me. I have great respect for you for giving those of us with mental illness a voice. Thank you so very much.
This book as always was another fantastic one by Bethany Kris!!! I’ve been waiting for John's story as I knew it would be a great one and Bethany didn’t disappoint!!! John is amazing and now has a special place in my heart. Maybe because I experience so many of the things John does or maybe its because he’s such a fantastic character or both but he is now one of my very favorites!!! My heart broke for him many times and at times a tear would slip from my eyes because I know first hand what its like for him. Bethany did such a fantastic job with him and describing his ever present illness. Thoughts, feelings, actions I have and continue to experience myself on a daily basis. I know how hard it is for me and I know that those who also suffer from mental illness will not only be able to relate but have gratitude for Bethany and for John's story. And maybe for those that don’t suffer from mental illness will stop and consider that it is very real and the people that suffer from it are also very real. Granted John is just a fictional character but there are so many real Johns in this world. I am a John. Some of my favorite people are Johns and there are so many more. Thanks again Bethany for using your voice for us.
Moving forward John is tall, dark and oh so fine. It’s not hard to see how Siena was dumbstruck and enamored with him. And I very much appreciate her. She is such a wonderful woman and her love for John is never-ending and unwavering. She accepts ALL of him and she see only HIM. Not his disorder. She simply sees John. That in and of itself is phenomenal!!! Not many people can do that. Her loyalty to John speaks volumes.
This book is suspenseful and anticipation hovers in the air from the beginning. For me anyway. You just know that bad stuff is around every corner. Such a great, great book!!! Hot and sizzling!!! John and Siena are an explosion together. I want what they have. I need it.
This book ends with a pretty big cliffhanger but it’s worth it. Thank God I waited until I already had Disgraced because I would die waiting. Read read this book!!! All of the books about the Marcellos are fantastical but this may be my favorite!!! Thank you again Bethany!!! You have proven once again why you are at the top of my list!!!
