User need: colour changes

Can we add an extra requirement that says that the content is designed so that shape is used instead of just colour?

I suggest that because if the requirement is met, and the user has only minor difficulties with contrast, that could be sufficient for them to not need to engage any specific display mode, and thus be a more immersive experience. There are several examples from the world of games that we could reference (that list actually misses one that I think is particularly good, but I’d have to ask Ian Hamilton about it, as I believe he gave it as an example but I can't remember its name).

Note: I understand this is similar to an existing WCAG requirement; not sure if the overlap is good, or we are trying to avoid it, but it is another—and a nicely immersive/unobtrusive—way to meet the user need.

This needs to have the XAUR label, but I don't have permissions to make that change on this repo.

Thanks @matatk to clarify for me.. You mean that the shape of particular items or object could be used to denote meaning, or other affordances?

@matatk We have raised this in RQTF. Can you clarify if you mean relating to cognitive issues? Stand icons or symbol sets? To convey diff types of info?

Is it a variation on the conveying information by colour, or where you have a road sign that is a shape that the user can recognise?

Sorry @RealJoshue108 I missed your extra comments there. I was referring to accessibility for people with vision impairments (particularly colour perception deficit) which is similar to WCAG SC 1.4.1 but maybe goes a bit beyond it.

Here's an example from the Game Accessibility Guidelines on not using colour alone—note the best practice examples at the end; they give examples of how the information is still conveyed visually, but no longer relies only on colour to convey its meaning.

However there are two ways this could be extended:

  • By providing semantic/textual info (as in WCAG SC 1.4.1) e.g. for screen reader users.
  • Into the area of providing improved support for people with cognitive impairments.

I'm not an expert on the cognitive side of things (though definitely interested). I wonder if that would be an additional, related, issue, rather than an extension of this one, though.

Also it seems there's more traffic on w3c/xaur#35, which seems very close to this—I'm going to close this one for now, but please re-open if you feel like there's some difference between these.
