Sara Vasilenko

M.S., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor

Dr. Vasilenko’s research focuses on adolescence and young adult health and well-being, with a focus on sexual behavior. Her work on this topic is inspired by both health risk and normative developmental perspectives. She is particularly interested in understanding what factors lead to better sexual health and well-being for individuals at different stages of the lifespan, as well as how sexual behavior is associated with physical, mental, and social health outcomes. In addition to these substantive interests, she also has a strong interest in developmental methodology, including longitudinal analysis and person-centered approaches. She has served as a Principal or Co-Investigator on multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health and other sources. She currently is a consulting editor of the Journal of Research on Adolescence and on the editorial board of Applied Developmental Science.

Research Focus

Dr. Vasilenko’s research focuses on:

  • How sexual behaviors, their predictors, and their consequences differ across the lifespan
  • What patterns of multidimensional, multilevel socio-ecological factors are associated with later health
  • How sexual behavior is associated with mental health and well-being

Research Projects

Dr. Vasilenko is involved in several on-going research projects, most of which involve the application of innovative statistical methods to secondary data ranging from intensive daily diary data to large, nationally representative longitudinal studies. Listed below are the projects she is most actively working on currently.

Multidimensional predictors of sexual behavior in adolescence and young adulthood

Adolescents and young adults are at risk of negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes; however, new approaches are needed to unlock insights from data collected across development in order for researchers to understand the multilevel predictors and developmental nature of sexual risk. This study uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to a) uncover patterns of multidimensional, multilevel risk factors in adolescence b) examine how these patterns are associated with sexual behavior, STIs and unintended pregnancy across adolescence and young adulthood.

Sexual development and well-being in Mexican adolescents

Researchers have increasingly moved beyond a risk-focused perspective on adolescent sexuality to a more normative approach that focuses on how sexual behavior may influence well-being. However, little of this research on sexual well-being has focused on Latin America. In collaboration with Dr. Graciela-Espinosa-Hernandez at UNCW, this study focuses on adolescent sexuality in Mexican middle and high school students, with a focus on cultural values and sexual well-being.
