Mobile schools for nomad children wins top UNESCO award
September 2023
The Bakarwal Gujars are nomadic pastoralists living on the southern side of the Himalayas in Pakistan and India. Because of their nomadic lifestyle, schooling has been impossible. The only option has been for the boys to abandon their traditional lifestyle and enrol at a religious boarding school. There has never been any option for girls.
However, since 2004, The Himalayan Literacy Network (THLN) has been providing quality education to Bakarwal children in northern Pakistan, enabling them to learn literacy and numeracy, and complete grades 1-5 of the national curriculum, without giving up their nomadic lifestyle.
THLN's innovative approach has secured them the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize.
