Colorful Inspiration That Provides Comfort, Continuity & Practicality
Help me give my students a classroom with a complete set of chairs that are the same size, put all my students at the appropriate level for the tables they work on, while adding a splash of color.
I am the Visual Arts teacher in a Pre-K to 5th grade public school. Over the last 12 years we have grown from 450 students to close to 750. Academically, we meet the diverse needs of students from many cultures and ethnic groups including children with special needs, English language learners, students in general education, as well as children in our gifted and talented program.
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like, design is how it works” - Steve Jobs
My students grow with me for six years, physically, emotionally and artistically. Having a comfortable, practical and environment that meets their needs is important. I lost my classroom 3 years ago, moving into the school’s library. The room now works well as an art room with one exception, the seats. The room started with stools, but has evolved, being the art room and a community space for building seats have come in and then been swapped out over time. It now has an assortment of large chairs, small chairs and wobbly stools that are not comfortable. Please help complete the room.
My Project
If my project is fully funded, I would use the funds to obtain a complete set of 32 chairs for my classroom. Providing continuity and practical furniture is my goal. The main problem is that I have chairs that are 2” smaller than they should be for a table 30” high (appropriate for a high school student). My smaller students’ physical ability to work effective and comfortably becomes an issue.
Thanks to NYC Funding for the Arts, I have already purchased 20 new chairs-all the same height, shape and style.
The only thing different is the color. My room is organized by table numbers that each have specific colors. These numbers and colors connect to all work, supplies and the storage of materials. I have already ordered 4 sky blue, 4 lime, 4 red, 4 yellow, and 4 orange. in order to have a complete set, I would need 4 green, 4 violet, and 4 marine blue chairs. These chairs provide a practical purpose as well as reinforcing the organization of my room plus providing a splash of color. Color makes the world a happier place, why not the art room?
