The Virginia Writing Center Association invites writing center tutors to submit proposals for our 2020 Writing Tutor Conference. The theme for this year’s conference is “Developing Our Voices.”

A primary mission of every writing center tutor is to help the students who use our services grow as writers. We know from experience, however, and from research studies like the Peer Writing Tutor Alumni Research Project, that tutors also experience their own personal, professional, and academic growth through their work in the writing center. The conference theme “Developing Our Voices” asks tutors to contemplate their own development. What skills have you learned through your training and experience? What habits of mind have you adopted? How have these skills or habits transferred into other aspects of your lives? How has writing center work changed you?

The theme also asks tutors to consider how the writing center fosters the expression of unique individual and community voices. Because every writing center consultation involves a dynamic and productive interplay between listening and speaking, writing centers have the potential to foster intercultural fluency and an engagement between identity and self-expression.
